How to growl - STRAIGHT forward

I really think this thread shows why practise is everything in growling, some of you guys are really fucking good growlers (in my opinion atleast) and some of you are not. I train atleast 2 times a week whith my band right now, and I improve every time, because I try new stuff every single training session, some sounds good, others just sound terrible. But my "live" voice is much better than my recorded I belive.
So the bottom line. You must find your own way of growling, by training, training training. Sometimes it hurts, but you´ll survive.

This is how i sound now, but I will outdo myself in a year. That I am sure of...

[edited] I just want to make clear that I don´t belive myself to be a growling dark god, but not a complete beginner either, just as most of you ain´t.

I agree with Lo0z3R I've been doing "growling" and the like for about 6 months now and I think each time I sing the song it gets better. I have some songs by my band you could check out and give your opinion....I guess its not really growling per say but....say what you will haha.

I read through a few previous threads and theres alot of people saying do it this way or do it that way, drink this or that and no proof that they can actually do it right. (no offense but theres more vocalists doing it wrong than right)

So i'll put some vocals clips on here for myself and Rich (the guy who owns this username) and explain how we both do it.

my clips are at;

I'm no expert, and not that great... but if you think my fundimental technique sounds ok then read on!

the technique i use is very simple but DOES take practise... first off... its LOUD.. The mistake alot of people seem to be making is that they want to somehow sound good without making alot of noise.. but the truth it, your neighbores wil probably hear you if your doing it right.

The second mistake people make is assuming that growls will sound good out of your mouth... they dont.. even the best vocalists sound nothign the same without music behind them. So find a backing track, or simply join a tolarent band on vocals :)

So my basic tips are this... dont be afraid to make alot of noise / experiment / do it over some music

IF you shout at somebody when your angry, your voice naturally distorts... thats what you need to work on...

heres rich's vocals (he's better and knows more about this!)

http://www.myspace.com/richdrumsandvocalsessions

but again he uses his voice loud, over music.. and distorts his voice by pushing his vocalchords with a basic loud shout... then focused it with practise so sound how he wanted..

very simple! but requires work just like guitar or any instrument

Could I get a reup please?

Thanks:loco:

when i am really putting everything i have into my vocals, sometimes it feels like i have to throw up, and i start coughing and shit. anything i can do to stop this?

Then you're singing like a retard?

Holy shit, you're good.
But you can also do growls at whispering level.
Listen up:
The Black Waltz
Ophelias Crown
Man, your vocals are really really nice!

How do you do it?

I try, sometimes I have phlemn and it sounds kinda okay, but then the throat eventually gets cleared and it just starts sounding like I'm whispering :loco:

I think I might have the fundimentals wrong

Clean the shit out of your ears, that's terrible!

He sounds very similar to Mikael Åkerfeldt, and Mikael Åkerfeldt is my favourite vocalist...

He's unique and nice... I'm tired of the same old vocals used by every vocalist from every band...

Just my opinion.

Good stuff Cortexon

Yeah Mike owns, but Cortexon sounds like shit and nothing like him. He's trying to imitate and doing a real shitty job. Mike doesn't sound whispery.

If I get a chance, might post one of me. I think I do a good job. It's late right now and I cbf. Although, I did vocals on a song for the project thing I'm doing with a mate. Not my best effort though.
