How to handle cock head bass players that want their bass too loud in the mix?

Maybe try to explain his purpose in the band. If he doesn't like it tell him he should've picked a different instrument to play, and it's his fault his ego is hurting. Tell him your responsibility is to make the entire band sound good, not just him. You can give him a "bass only" mix for his own enjoyment if he wants. Tell him a good bass player knows how important he/she is, even though he/she may go unnoticed by the common listener. Make sure you have him sit in on a mixing session and mute and unmute the bass, so he can hear the entire ass drop out of the mix when he's not there. Say "Isn't it crazy how the guitars lose their heaviness and get all weak when you're not there? That's right, because you're the one making them sound heavy! You're the balls of the band! You may not get stroked as much, but when it comes down to it, there's no juice without you!"

Then bitch slap him.

Just an idea.....
You could always make the mix quite and more bass and tell them the volume comes down with more bass. Usually everyone wants volume so you might win that way.

Good luck though as Ive had this problem before and had it ruin a mix just to make the band happy. Also for now on I would tell bands up front that there coming to you for your sound and just let them know there place and were they stand in the process. Helps when this sort of thing happens because its not always the bassist that does this, sometimes its multiple band members!

so trick them into wanting quieter bass?
i like the way you think joshua wickman....

haha

I'm all for having the bass own the entire EQ spectrum during a fill, I suppose that goes for all instruments. For the rest of the song? The bass has it's place. It's not in the front of a mix.

Unless, of course, he convinces the lead guitarist to make his mix quieter.

could do with a little more going on in the low mids (400hz-ish?) it sounds ok in the sweeps but for the other parts it seems to dissapear. maybe try distorting the bass a little to bring out the mids more, or you could just get to work with the automation so that it doesnt jump out too much in the sweeps but is still audible in the other parts of the song.
