hurray, cigarettes forbidden in public places

I quit smoking cold turkey back in 2000, after 15 years of at least a pack a day. I absolutely LOVED smoking - all the way up until the last drag. I still, on occasion, have dreams (nightmares) about smoking at the bar. The dreams were very frequent for the first couple of years. During the first year of cig abstinence, I repeatedly told my wife that I'd never bust smokers' balls for smoking around me. It didn't smell that bad. But....after the first year everything changed. All of a sudden, cigarette smoke became the most foul odor imaginable. The faintest hint of that smell gives me an instant headache, and my stomach does a somersault. For any of you thinking about quitting, this is when you know that you will never smoke cigs again. Trust me, it ain't cool. I'd rather stick my nose in a fresh pile of dogshit. I can smell smoke coming through my air vents on the highway, even if the smoker's vehicle is way ahead of me.

It was a strange thing to move from Cali to the east coast and see so many people smoking here (losers - jk), as it is generally frowned upon out west.

Since I'm a libertarian, I don't believe in creating laws that ban smoking in public places. If everyone is so worried about their health and the air that they breathe, then someone should outlaw automobiles 'cause breathing that shit is worse for you than secondhand smoke could ever be.

Quitting smoking is a testament to one's willpower, because it's probably the hardest thing a diehard smoker could ever do.

I smoke cigars on occasion.

This is damn near a mirror image of what I did. Quit cold turkey 14 years ago. Could not believe how much better food and drink tasted!

I'm also with ya on being able to smell the smoke from other vehicles...

Played golf on Friday and had a cigar, but I just don't consider that the same being outside on a golf course.

Smoked pretty regularly for about 6 years, one day decided I was tired of not being able to breathe, so I just stopped. No slowing down or rationing out smoking, I went from a pack and a half to nothing, wasnt as hard as I thought it would be honestly. First week or two was pretty nerve racking but it got better after that. I agree with MetalKingdom, cant stand the smell of it now really, some types make me a little nauseous. I still dont care if people smoke though and I wouldnt support infringing upon there rights. As Bill Hicks said: "I've got some news for you folks, Non-Smokers Die....Every day!"

Here in Seattle they just passed a law banning smoking in any public place. You must be at least 25 feet away from any businesses doorway to smoke. No one ever goes that far away though.

To me, having to deal with someone else's smoke is the equivalent of being pissed on. It's gross and disgusting and unsanitary and I shouldn't have to worry about it when I go out to have a good time, so I'm glad this law is in effect. Although, EVERYONE that goes to a bar has to piss at some point or another and they have special rooms for people to do that. Why can't they make special rooms for the smaller number of people that want to smoke their cigarettes, too?

I totally agree. I dont care if people want to smoke, but I do care if they blow their smoke near me. I dont know if all of Canada is like this, but in all of BC, all bars/pubs have either a smoking room or a balcony for smokers. It seems fair.

smoking sections in restaurants were always a joke, you could be sitting in a non smoking section and a guy right behind you could be in the smoking section.. i dont see how that EVER worked.

i say its all a good thing as far as restaurants go, i dont smoke in restaurants, and i would rather not have smoke near me when im eating.

Thats what got passed in here in NJ... any public place except cigar shops and casinos, theres a lot of fine print involved that i wont bore you all with, but thats basically the jist of it

I think we're following suit here in Melbourne.

New tobacco laws were passed by Parliament on 10 August 2005 and will take effect from 1 March 2006 and 1 July 2007.

From 1 March 2006 the new laws will:

* ban smoking in most enclosed workplaces;
* ban smoking, the promotion of tobacco products and the sale of tobacco products at underage 'music/dance' events;
* ban smoking in covered areas of train station platforms, tram shelters and bus shelters;
* ban 'buzz marketing' and non-branded tobacco advertising; and
* strengthen laws to enforce the ban on cigarette sales to your people.

From 1 July 2007 the new laws will ban smoking in enclosed licensed premises.

I feel like we're living in a golden age. I have dreamt of this happening for years.

Now for the death of the internal combustion engine...

I say... make nicotine illegal and burn all the crops to the ground. It'll be hell on earth while everyone suffers from their withdrawls for a few months, but eventually they'll get over it and the world will be smoke free!

It's not just here in Seattle, it's Washington State law, which I mentioned in an earlier post.

if nicotine became illegal, the entire planet would implode... wayyy too many people smoke as it is to ban nicotine all together. so instead, if smoking becomes more of a hassle than a pleasure or leisurely activity, it will drive ppl not to smoke cuz they just dont want to deal with the hassle of it, hence, bans in public places
