I bought a new car (the "I wanna be like Gugs" thread)...

I used some biodegradeable engine cleaner this morning and all it did was cause some "etching" on the aluminum parts

i "clayed" my car last week as well ... holy crap what a difference. its like a new car.
second time I ever did it, first time on my previous mini ... but man ... on a dark colored car it really "works"

what's this "etching" you speak of btw?

hmm...I dont know. I just saw it described as such on a website. It looks like it left behind a residue but it's actually a physical change in the surface of the aluminum...it's not something I can wipe off. Although, it did clean up the engine a bit. Nowhere near what I was hoping for though. I want a sparkly and shiny engine and I don't know how to get it.

what is claying? Do you apply it like a wax?

clay is pretty much what it implies .... clay ... use it with some sort of spray lubricant to remove the most minute dirt in your paint. it literally leaves your paint factory fresh (if you didn't neglect it for like a decade). still should polish/wax after the process ... but it's a great first step.

typically once every year or two its enough

lol @ the Dodge Challenger

I made a wrong turn last night and ended up at the BMW dealer instead of the movie theater. It turned out to be a good opportunity to see how small and contoured BMW's backseats are....completely kid-seat unfriendly

yeah they are rather useless ... cool if you have ONE fancy pampered kid maybe ... but anything more; it's Chrysler T&C time.

My 96 Civic has been acting up as of late. In the past 2 weeks there have been 4 occurrences of my car failing to start when actuated. The battery was replaced not 2 months back, and I don't reckon it's a faulty alternator either. The dash indicators all come on, but the engine fails to rise. A pump of the accelerator usually is the jolt needed to get the blood flowing. I speculate it's either the starter, or something that has to do with the gas. Whether it be a filter, a censor, etcetera, I can not decrypt. Gahhhhh

does the starter go or is it just like click, dead

if it just clicks then my car did the same thing last winter and it was indeed the starter, changed that and no problemo. it started out intermittently like you describe and then just got progressively worse until i had to turn the key 20 times to get it to start, then one day it was totally dead

if the starter goes but the engine fails to start then maybe the fuel pump???

Yep, this is what it's doing precisely. I'm going to sit it out and let it get progressively worse before I change it out. I can't be arsed to part with any bread for a problem that doesn't prevent me from reaching point B.

The new Dodge Durango is pretty nice. Better looking than the Explorer. That's cool that the Explorer has a 243 hp four cylinder available though. 28 mpg in a seven passenger vehicle? Nice.
Where were these engines when I was younger? Oh, wait. Gas was $1 and no one cared.
