I bought a new car (the "I wanna be like Gugs" thread)...

I would love to get a diesel some day. If small pickups came with diesel here I'd probably have one. Or if they ever do a Jeep diesel I'm likely all over that shit. No, the Liberty doesm't count.

I hate to ruin rms' day but vw diesels are disturbingly unreliable and expensive to fix. Check out reviews on thetruthaboutcars.com
Even the truck diesels have been pieces of shit for the most part (Powerchoke and Caterpiller)

Previous generation diesels were reliable ( think 240D or ford F250) but they were smoggy and slow as absolute fuck

Yeah diesel somehow doesn't make sense nowadays. There are a shitload of cars that can get 40mpg plus on regular gas.

Don't sweat it. My parents have had one for two years. 45k+ at this point without any issues. I think it's an awesome car.

45k? I should hope there's no issues. The problem with the vw diesels is that where your average modern car is just getting broken in at 100k, the vw tdi is having catastrophic engine problems.

That's what ive read and a friend's experience. I don't know personally. I really wanted one recently and all the bad reviews turned me away.

car is too small haha..I wanted a subaru impreza hatchback or the golf but no hatchbacks in Colorado and golf was tiny too..you're ruining this car for me! haha

my dad has a big GMC diesel truck for towing their fifth wheel trailer around. diesel fuel is so expensive right now that seems like the only reason to have one really? what is the benefit of diesel on a small car these days?

Sorry! Its a really nice car. You should have many years of trouble free driving ahead of you

Edit: @ rms

haha well i started typing that before he posted again, and "what is the benefit of diesel on a small car these days?" was a serious question, not a taunt.

@Neal: *shrugs* I was reading something where a bunch of truck type dudes said they would buy a diesel ONLY if they were pulling a fifth wheel otherwise its gas all the way...10 cylinder whatevers. The complexity and $10k price increase is nowhere near worth it.

*shrugs* it'd be cool if they were loud and rattled and smoked but they don't even do that anymore :loco:

diesels have recently been more popular than gasoline cars here because gas is insanely expensive

diesel is too but its still "better"

i run my car on a 50/50 mixture of gas and ethanol atm which is pretty economical all things considered

how's the mileage?
Maybe this was discussed somewhere earlier but I've forgotten, but I've heard pretty much only bad things about this (the lower price is eaten by higher consumption)
