I don't know how to say this without being offensive, but...

I would not chalk it up to drugs either. And I consider it a bit disrespectful to make such speculation.
But I agree with commandante and others (though I'm not as offended by this thread as he appeared to be). Anyway, yeah, they're probably under an enormous amount of stress for many reasons.
 
I heard that getting stoned if you're already stressed and sad about things can sometimes make it worse instead of making you happier, depends what it is though I guess. That's only what I've heard.

If that is true, and taking into consideration the fact that he COULD be using drugs, if he was already stressed about things then perhaps it pushed him over the edge. I dunno, blaming this on drugs is not the right direction to take. Things constantly go wrong in people's lives. I know this from experience, and everyone who posts here knows from experience also. It's part of living - things go well, then things get fucked up. Therefore Martin L. was probably just in one of those phases where stress got the best of him. How can people fault him for that?

Think about it this way - in his position, at the time, if your heart wasn't in the music and you had too much crap going on inside your head then the last thing you want to do is continue on a world-wide tour that no doubt tires and stresses you out.

Don't jump to conclusions about things like this being the results of taking drugs.

you know, i gotta admit; my hands arent clean either... one time, about a year ago, i was at a party and there were people drinking and smoking and having "fun", and i smoked. yep, a ciggarette. I was sooooo fucked up. that was my wakeup call, and ever since that experience, ive become a part of the MMSC (Michigan Militant Straightedge Community). I killed 3 members. yep, me and my buddy JC walked up there and shit and killed 3 members. that was back in 2002 though, things are different now. noone is supporting drugs here, we are just basically trying to say as a listener you should not be interested and be affected if the drummer of the band you listen to, does drugs. clear now?

And I'm NOT one of them. When I smoke, I usually dont want to go outside my house at all. Being stoned makes me a little paranoid. :o I also know many other people who cant handle it very well, and hardly ever smoke. Smoking too much for too long can also make me a bit depressed (and thats why I stopped everyday pot-smoking). Now I only smokes once a while in the weekends, and have no problem with it. I dont want the pot to rule my life, but I want my life to rule pot! :)
 
The first thing I thought when Mikael made the announcement was, yeah, the Middle East would stress the fuck out of me as well. It also must have been a shit sandwich to abort the shows in Chile after travelling so far (maybe Martin's friends and family were going to hook up with him and it got cancelled). Those factors and the nonstop touring could affect the best of us.
 
i just heard of something horrible that opeth has done. rumor has it that at their last show, mikael was drunk and on some sort of drug and pulled out his phallus and wacked Peter and various memebers of the crowd repeatidly across the face. i have no idea if this is true or not, but if it is, then i am just disgusted. you see what drugs do to you? they turn you into perverted drug addicts.
