This is pretty amazing, thank you for the video. Can you compare it with the SM58, that is supposed to be the SM57 with the grill + foam (although in a different shape than SM7b)?

Great video! Laughed quite hard when I realised I preferred the sound of the SM57 + Filter over anything. I suppose you'd get the same sound (like you said) if you were the same distance from the diaphragm as you would be on the SM7. That said, fuck you, I'm keeping my SM7.

Also just for thought, I can get a WAY better performance out of an SM7 as opposed to a little handheld mic like an sm57 or my beta58. Its easier to hold, its foam filter is amazing and is just perfect imo. I get SOOO many plosives if i use my beta 58a. I always have to take the cap off and use an external pop filter (which makes it really uncomfortable to hold and is just annoying overall)

I think you can't just say its no difference when you just take your talking voice as a signal into it.
What about impulse-fidelity? You would need other signals to really compare them.
F.e a pink noise for the frequency spektrum. Some transient rich signals for the impulse-fidelity.
That way as now its just a country lore

Thanks Anssi! I've gotten really good results for a long time now using the 57 for vocals. For some singers, it just seems to work best. Now I feel somewhat justified. lol

You are free to do the test if you wish, but as we all know, stuff like moving the microphone 1cm or changing the angle makes a really drastic change to the tone.
My main points in the video was:
- SM7b is NOT a large diaphragm microphone
- It is basically a glorified SM57 with extra features and thus very SIMILAR sounding to SM57, but not identical, as you hopefully heard

You can do the test as you want of course, but I think its not good to draw the conclusion that because it sounded similar nobody should spend the 300 more for the SM7.
Because you made the vid like you were busting a myth. I mean of course the proximity effect is big on the sm57, cause its made for live use mainly.

just a quick question regarding pop filters for a mic like the sm58. If I buy a filter like this

ahjteam, you have come off as kind of a dick in any interactions we've made thus far, but this video is pretty interesting and I thank you for it.
I'll get an sm7 whenever.. but for now, I'm going to try buying the rk345 for my sm58 and save a couple hundred dollars... to make hip trend music. Haha.
