I realize why I hate the new Blind Guardian

This band has no bite whatsoever on the new cd. I know bands change, and I'm totally ok with that but I feel like Blind Guardian is totally leaving metal behind and going toward a total Prog makeover.

To me, I can see 3 totally different eras of the band: The speedy beginning years, the ultra melodic and heavy metal 90s and now this pomp, nearly AOR style of Y2K and beyond. Listen to the riffs; they're like some jazzy toe tappers that have nothing at all to do with the continued imagery of dragons and such. I know, I know, it's called a TWIST in the myth, but this seems no longer a twist to me. It seems like a path more than anything based on the last few cds.

I'm not suprised the drummer left. By the sounds of Savage Circus, he wants to continue in metal. By the sounds of BG, they want....hell, I don't know what they want.

What gives? This cd should be called "Jolly Minstrels Prance Around a Fire" so the buyer would have the proper mindset entering into it. :erk:

I must completely disagree. I will say that they wanted to focus on giving Hansi the ability to use his voice more dynamically, but the riffs are pretty damn close to the strength of the past (I think that they mostly just put them more in the background... quieter a little). That and they've always leaned towards a more proggy-form of heavy metal. I'm sorry, but until you can show me another non-metal band that sounds anything close to them...

I kinda see where you're coming from on this, I've noticed a lack of "bite" too, but I think there was some of that still there on ANATO (Punishment Divine, Under the Ice, etc.). Nevertheless I think A Twist in the Myth is a better album. It is getting further away from their old sound, yes, but overall I think it's a lot more coherent than ANATO was, and frankly I don't have a huge problem with them doing what they like to do. They aren't trying to do this for radio airplay or anything like that, this is just what Hansi and Andre like now. *shrugs* I don't think they're going to write another SFB or IFTOS, and I'm just happy they keep bringing out the old stuff live.

I was going to write up something long winded, but I will be brief and just say that, every big band synonymous with power metal has had their great CDs, good CDs, and it's allright but I'll listen to it because it's by my favorite band CDs. For example Helloween had "The Dark Ride" & "Rabbit Don't Come Easy" which allthough had some decent tracks, in my eyes didn't really live up to classics such as "Time of the Oath", "Better then Raw" or even "Master of the Rings" for the Deris material anyway, Before "Time of the Oath" they had "Chameleon" & "Pink Bubbles go Ape". Recently they released "Keeper of the Seven Keys: The Legacy" which had 2 CDs worth of just KICK ASS.. I would even go far as to say there are no bad songs on this album. I think it is even better an album because the previous albums were not as good if I can be frank.

Dragonforce is a perfect example of too much of a good thing. Where the repetition while although good makes the music less then what it is.

And I said I wasn't going to be longwinded..bah..

Personally I don't think it's possible I could ever completely not like a Blind Guardian CD, I'm excited about their instrumental work coming out next year and I am happier then a pig in shit for the oppertunity to see them tour the US later this year.

A Twist To The Myth kicks ass.

I totally agree. If they're turning prog, then so be it. They are going in the right direction. There's nothing I don't like about the record. It was worth the wait. :headbang:

I think the new CD picks up right where Nightfall left off in the sound Progression, and personally, I LOVE the new shit. I loved ANATO, but it was like Blind Guardian taking a break from their sound.. now they're back and kicking ass again. I just wish it didn't take 8 years.

A Twist in the Myth kicks some serious ass. BG should be commended for what they have achieved with the album. I'll admit I don't think it's going to be my favourite- I think because it's less complicated than their past couple of albums, but that doesn't make it any less rocking. It's still all I'm listening to at the moment :p
They strongly maintain their status as my favourite band, after the new-album-critical-reevaluation period.

A Twist in the Myth has lots of "elements" from their previous works, especially from Nightfall and Somewhere Far Beyond. It sounds different but it is surely a great album. And seriously, please no more Imaginations... or Nightfall... One is enough. I prefer BG to play bongos and banjos rather than to see another sad event like Operation Mindcrime II...

To me, Blind Guardian has never been a prog band. If by "prog", people are talking about orchestral arrangements and epic-scale compositions, then they are as proggy as Rage, who aren't prog either.

BG is good, solid power metal that veers off the path forged by Helloween in the 80's. But it's still power metal with more mid-tempo grooves and less high-pitched singing.

I'm afraid I'll never understand the progginess of BG.

It's like I said in an previous thread; I think I get the Prog vibe because it seems to me that they've sacrificed a strong chorus in favor of multiple "chunks" of melody that never really come together to form one solid song for me. It's fragmented and on top of that, the riffs just aren't there for me.

That being said, I DID order the limited edition box set from Nuclear Blast..so I've still supported them financially. I'm going to see them live in December too. So they'll have a chance to win me over but they have to do double the work with the new songs and with the PP3 performance which was dry at best.

A Twist in the Myth is by far the album of the year, IMO.

I think the album cements my opinion that BG are right now the best band in metal.

If you look at all their albums and the progression from the first album to this album, you see that while the style has changed, the quality of the music has not. It has remained great.

They have proven that they can play early raw speed metal with the best of 'em along with the mid era Euro power metal along with the epic and bombastic styles of NiME and ANATO and finally with the straight forward but absolutely brilliant ATITM which combines the last 3 albums into a short and concise testament of what power metal should be.

Blind Guardian are metal legends....APPRECIATE! :headbang:

I like the new album better than the opera album. having 20 vocal tracks on each song gets old. It was too polised for me. The only thing I miss on teh new album is the long epic. Overall B

I have to agree with Woosta on this one.. the cd is just blah to me. Nothing grabs me. That said, I'll still check them out on tour to see if the songs bit me when live.
