I realize why I hate the new Blind Guardian

Is it Imaginations From The Other Side? No.
Is it Nightfall in Middle Earth? No.
Is it Somewhere Far Beyond? No.

Its still vintage Blind Guardian and it kills. Period.

My personal Blind Guardian favorites in order of preference

1> Tales from the Twilight World
2> Nightfall in Middle Earth
3> Somewhere Far Beyond
4> Imaginations from the Other Side
5> A Night at the Opera
6> Follow the Blind
7> A Twist in the Myth
8> Forgotten Tales (Love their version of "Spread your Wings")
9> Battalions of Fear

I don't dislike any of it, but being clearly objective there are some albums that appeal more then others and to even disect it futher songs that appeal more then others accross it all.

If I only had to pick 5 songs to have on a BG mix CD it would be.

1> Mirror, Mirror
2> When Sorrow Sang
3> Lost in a Twilight Hall
4> The Last Candle
5> Lord of the Rings

I could probably pick 10 songs, bah.. screw it all the CDs :)

A Night at the Opera is still my all time favorite album. This new album doesn't come close to that, but, it is still one of the greatest album of 2006. Blind Guardian are one of those bands that are so good, even their lesser albums are incredible.

I don't understand why someone into PROG/POWER could not enjoy A Night at the Opera as their best album? Everyone here seems to be slamming it, saying "A Twist in the Myth is not good.. but it sure as hell at least is better than ANATO." Bull F'n Shiznite. The layered vocals and complex progressive instrumentation under that power metal guise was just amazing! The intro drum riff to "Precious Jerusalem" or the complete bombastic epic awesomeness of "And Then There Was Silence." There're two sides of music I enjoy: high energy good times and deep introspective dark times. To me for the high energy good times, music simply didn't get any better than that album. And I really don't think its possible for it to ever get that good again.

ANATO has many good songs on it. I also don't think Twist is better then ANATO. Just hearing the chorus on "And then There was Silence" "We have been betrayed by the wind and the rain" or "It can't be seen that there's blood on the green" from "Battlefield" are prime examples of why Blind Guardian is Blind Guardian and this can be spotted on most any of their works. This little thing that makes it BG. I'm not saying Twist doesn't have this, in fact it does and some catchy riffs that are notoriously BG, I appreciate it for what it is, but I won't *cough* follow the blind *cough* just cause it's a BG album, to put it on a pedestal.

Still I enjoy the fact that BG & Hansi like to experiment in a way that gives something new while still retaining a little bit of the old flavor. I adore "The Wicked Witch" from Demons & Wizards.

I find a lot of the melodies on this one are more...I guess subversive than their previous works. In that sense I think its more prog in that at least for me, its taken me a while to let the album sink in and digest as opposed to some of their earlier albums. So far, I think the first half of the album is briliant, with Otherland being my favorite track by far. I still haven't really given the 2nd half of the album enough of a listen, as I'm constantly swapping this disc out with various albums from the Freak Kitchen catalog :).

It's a good album.

I did see mention that Hanzi has been working on an orchestral Lord Of The Rings album for years, and that it's supposed to be released as a Blind Guardian album as well. THAT doesn't sound metal either, but I still want to hear it. Good for them pushing some boundaries. Who wants it all to sound the same?

Damn Michael TEOF, I totally forgot about "And then there was silence"; I think because that song was released much earlier than the album, I subconsciously removed it from ANATO. "And then there was silence" is one of BG's greatest songs. Pure epic metal! The chorus slays me... it is the quintessence of BG: A magical world, be it fantasy (LOTR) or our ancient past (Troy), is gone. All we have are (forgotten) tales and bard songs by which to remember them. So long live ANATO, even if its just for "And then there was silence"....

I finally got the chance to listen to this album THANK YOU EMUSIC!! I personally love it! As for the "proggy" feel, well, the fact that I actually like prog metal makes it all the better for me (I am listening to Reading Zero's Satellite Sessions as I am typing this for instance, also thanks to eMusic!)! I wanted an actual copy of this album, but they were all gone at ProgPower by the time I remembered I needed to get a copy, but there it was - on eMusic in all its glory! I do have to agree that A Night At The Opera is an excellent album and I still listen to it quite a bit. However, I still find this latest effort still as much metal as anything they have done. Also, I cannot friggan wait to see these guys on the 4th of December at Jaxx!

It has to be asked...how on earth can anybody call Blind Guardian -- one of the definitive power metal bands -- prog?

Keyboards and harmonies do not make something prog metal. Where do BG use irregular time signatures or that sort of thing? BG is a power metal as power metal gets. And Then There Was... is an epic, sure, but Halloween has done some of those as well...epic doesn't make something prog.

(As it happens, I like BG quite a bit so I'm not bashing them in the least).

So where is the prog coming from?

Agreed 100% Nick!

it's a dissapointment, i think. while your blocks of the band, such as speedy early years and ultra melodic/heavy...however i saw Blind Guardian as BG all the time. i think they all tie together and progress is their own way, a brilliance on each album.

however, i will agree with some of what you said. i do not care much for the new sound. a shame indeed because in my mind, Savage Circus album Dreamland Manor doesn't hold a candel to any BG album other than the most recent, A Twist In The Myth.

i think they are an incredibly unique and original band. however this last album is much simple. i also noticed the lack of backings vocals and booming choruses, as well as awesome melodies, often played through a song (such as was done on NIME and somewhat of ANATO).

i can only hope that A Twist In The Myth will hold to what the title is, and we can expect another masterpeice from BG in the years to come.

i agree they aren't prog, but i wouldnt label them as "defintive power metal". they have been extremely unique and each member has an his own nearly untouched aspect he brought to the band.

think about that i mean... blind guardian, sonata arctica, freedom call, helloween, elvenking, human fortress, dream evil, stratovarius, gamma ray. these all are "power metal" bands. but many are much different indeed. of course, BG i believe remains the most unique and talented.

I second panzers post - as good as I think ATITM is, A Matter of Life and Death is the album of the year hands down!!!!
