I'd like one of these for Christmas...

I am always highly suspicious of all singing all dancing stereos these days and would strongly suggest you listen to one of your CD's playing on it before you consider buying it. I went looking for my last hi-fi nearly 2 years ago and took a couple of CD's with me - hunted all the way up and down Oxford street and couldn't find anything that fitted my specs and sounded good. Eventually I found my beauty - it didn't have the built in mini-disc player, but as I was buying a portable on a little after that it wasn't really important. It is (was?) state of the art on the one hand, but incredibly simple on the other. Not too many bells and whistles. And oh God the sound . . . as Mark can atest it is utterly amazing. I was also lucky as it was being discontinued and I got $500 off - cost me $1500 (all prices approx as I actually paid in £'s ;)).

Good thing that it's a Panasonic though - my walkman and discman are both Panasonic and I swear by them. Mini disc is a Sony, but that particular model came very highly recommended so thats why I went with it.

I like talking about stereos - I can't wait to see mine again! YAY!!!

sony is shit
well its not all shit, but they make a lot of sub standard products with very high price for the quality
people just buy it because of the brand name

I agree, and I'm not a fan of Sony. However that particular mini-disc player was voted product of the year by many hi-fi mags, and it was recommended to me when I bought my stereo (remarkably for me, also a Sony). I've had bad experiences with them in the past but the hi-fi had the most amazing sound and build quality to it and the mini-disc like wise. I can't say I'd go looking for Sony products again unless they came as highly recommended, and as I said Panasonic are really my faves when it comes to something to play my music on. :) But when something's good, then it's good. :spin:

Thanks for the advice, Dreamy. Much obliged! I'll be sure to take a couple of CDs with me when I go a-purchasing, and get the store evacuated before I test them .

My Philips mini system is about due for an upgrade, and since this one is as close to a surround sound/home theatre package as I can afford (with its own DVD player no less), it looks like the best choice. Kenwood and Sony make similar models, but Panasonic are the most reliable IMHO :).

Roll on January sales...
