What would you want changed?

I'd personally love to hear some more of Mendez. Maybe even some newly written and recorded bass lines, rather than filler bass.

I think it'd be great if they could try to remedy the cut-outs in whatever way they can.. but I don't think there's much that can be done, since the tapes themselves had the errors. It's happened to me before with ADATs... I hate em.

I think it'd be cool if they could clear up the guitars slightly. Just free up that midrange a bit and make it easier to listen to.

Drums could use some more power... maybe mix in a bit of samples and tighten the entire album up, rhythmically.

Im not too botherd but you make some good points...I'd kinda like tha album to flow like MAYH...although isnt really remixing...well...by flow i mean have no breaks inbetween songs kinda thing.

It really wouldn't matter if it got mixed, considering it still sounds great on it's own.

It would be more money I'd have to spend, but I would get it.

BUT, if it was remixed in 5.1 it would be much cooler.

Imagine if Steven Wilson helped with Still Life... Oh God.. It would be like 100x better..

But its still pretty good right now. Yeah I think they should clear up the guitars a bit.

you've been frequenting the Andy Sneap forum again haven't you Moonlapse?

actually i'm pretty sure i've read him say that he detests andy sneap's style and how me makes all the bands have the same boring production. i think he's a fan of what jens did on ghost reveries.

IMO they should just rerecord the whole album :p

No, no. I don't detest Andy's production style. I like the clarity, power and seperation he gets in his mixes, but I really don't like how he seems to use the same approach for every band. In my opinion what he did for Deliverance didn't work at all for Opeth. They're not the kind of band that you can give the standard metal treatment to.

Yeah, I am a fan of what Jens did. He made it sound natural, yet still modern... not 'overproduced' at all.

jens' production of GR was pretty damn good actually, did a good job of integrating the keys without making it sound overproduced. steve wilson is ok, but not only does he influence Opeth into writing material that could fit onto Porcupine Tree albums, but after listening to an album you feel like you've been on the telephone for ages, that effect is so badly overused it makes me cringe now when listening to some stuff. I actually think (and im probably gonna get laughed at here) that Morningrise has the best production, particularly if you have a good sound system with a subwoofer, you can hear everything clearly and it gives the perfect production for the style of music the album is.

I love Sneap's work for Nevermore and Exodus, but it didnt worj for Deliverance at all. I agree with daz436, Wilson does have an obsession with that "sound" that he has, like you described with the telephone. He definitely does overdo it, but I like PT for that.

I always liked the way Still Life sounded. It had its own feel, it is unique in a good way.

What ever happened to the surround sound mix of Still Life? I would really like to see this.

Peaceville records have slight, though yet unconfirmed plans to release a 5.1 surround sound mix re-release of Opeth's 4th album, "Still life". More information as we have it.

I think the obsession over the 'telephone effect' was probably on Mike's end. It's even mentioned on the documentary by both him and Wilson how fond he was of it.

Nonetheless, it seems to have died down a bit. Not that much of it on Ghost Reveries (if at all?).

I would like to see them rerecord Still Life. That's never looked upon favorably by fans, but I think it's somewhat warranted with the sound problems on the album. I'm sure Mendez' parts don't have the flair that they do on other albums. They could include the lost ending of Serenity Painted Death as a bonus track. SL seems to be rather hard to find anyway, and I'm sure RR wouldn't mind a rerelease of some sort.

I hate these 5.1 mixes. What about people who don't have an expensive sound system? It's for a limited audience. Listening to one of these on my crappy three piece speakers doesn't make a difference. In fact, it seems to sound worse since I'm not using the intended output. In addition those mixes can't be used on portable music players as far as I know.

Yep, you're right. It's my fault that I'm poor.

Get a job

Re-recording might work, but more often than not, it ruins the original flair of the album. So I say no.

You don't actually need an expensive system to get a good surround sound set-up. Some of the better set-ups you can get are the ones that are everything in a box under $400 or so (check this out, although I dislike cnet...). Sure, they won't be as good as the $1000+ systems you can get... but one will be quite surprised at how these things can actually sound.

And by the way, most surround sound releases (on DVD-A and SACD) have a stereo mix as well. So even if you dont' have a surround sound system, you'll still be able to access a different mix or remaster.
