I'm trying to recruit a "mainstreamer" to our side.. Which cd?

I would normally have given an Opeth, or In Flames title here, for those seem to be the obvious choices. However, for someone who seems genuinely interested in what you have to offer, i thought maybe a more meditated decision would be a good call. I suggest perhaps giving him (assuming you have the album yourself) a copy of Edge Of Sanity - Crimson 2 for several reasons. First off, it meets your actualy requirements with leaps and bounds: Its very heavy, yet melodic, catchy...and to a music lover...probably easy to keep ones attention. And also, it is a progressive album, with non-metal elements (clean vocals, keyboards and synths)...and its one long 40 minute song. To me, if all that doesnt intrigue his interests...then he is a lost cause.

Basically, Crimson 2 would do everything for him that Opeth would...except not be so weird and offputing at times.

guys, are you kidding? i know my arms your hearse is a great album, but it's DEFINITELY not accessible. someone who has never gotten into heavy music before isn't going to like it. i suggest either blackwater park or deliverance, their two most accessible albums. once you get him into those, THEN go for the earlier stuff. but if you show him mayh first, he'll be like "oh this sucks, never mind."

Yea you kind of right. I don't think Opeth should be the first step.
Work some In Flames and some Dark Tranq. first Then Opeth with Blackwater and so on :)

I say Blackwater Park.

Though it was The Art of Balance by Shadows Fall that got me into really heavy stuff. Then BP.

yes, try blackwater park.... warn him to listen to it numerous times, because most likley, like any opeth fan, it takes a bit of time to enjoy the album.

I'm also gonna have to go for Blackwater Park. It's the easiest to listen to, of all Opeth's albums, due to the clarity and a good balance of heavy/soft. My arms your hearse is a crazy choice to give to someone - if anything, it'll detract him from metal. I can still remember the first time I heard the album, i found it kinda boring, and the sound seemed washed out to me. Of course, it grew on me and became one of my all time fav albums, like all of Opeth, but i doubt that someone not used to death metal will be willing to, uh, commit enough time like that.

Well ur all newbies in death metal so just shut up.
Neither Dark tranquillity or Opeth is death metal idiots.

True, but he wasn't asking for an album on the platform of its accessibility, he was asking for an album in terms of heaviness. My Arms Your Hearse would probably best fit the bill there.

Immersed in Blood :D
Cryptopsy:p
Napalm Deatho_O

or just give him Six Feet Under´s Maximum Violence
he shure will like this even if it´s not Death Metal to me but its heavy

Ha... don't play Opeth. They only become interresting after multiple listens. I was way into metal long time before I started appreciating Opeth. Now Bloodbath would be a better choice if you really want to give him that little bit of Opeth. Brutal and easy to get into.
