in flames > DT

In Flames has three albums worth listening to: Jester Race, Whoracle and Colony. I like them very much, especially Whoracle.

But... you can argue DT's entire catalogue, except the mundane Character (sorry guys, I know a bunch of you disagree) and Projector, is pretty impressive.

In Flames is also a terrible live band.

But this is a question of production and their sound. Who composes better music? I don't really know. It's a straightforward fact that DT's music is more imaginative and complex in every aspect if you were to ask someone to read their music.

To each his own, though.

Not that I care about lyrics but In Flames' guys have some... err... issues with the English language ahehehe. Not the best lyrics in the world, AM I RIGHT!?

I dig the earlier albums. And there's no "perfect" in music, so that's a non-issue to me. Their newer stuff has equally silly lyrics. That's not really something I take in consideration with a band, although it's nice when a band does have good / fun lyrics (I love Dan Swano's songs, for example, cheesy as they may be).

Metal is my favorite genre of music by far but as a whole scores an F+ in poetry, if you get my drift. IF METAL WERE A COLLEGE POETRY COURSE, IT WOULD BE THAT STRANGE CHUBBY GOTH GIRL WHO ALWAYS WRITES AWKWARD ANALOGIES ABOUT HER SEXUALITY INTO HER POEMS

THANKS ..

;)

I do agree though the lyrics in metal music are often epic fail. The higher caliber writing is one of the main reasons I like DT and some of their songs. There are certain bands I listen to for general mood or to practice with but I really do wonder what they were thinking or if there is a light on upstairs sometimes :/

For example a new Epica song:

Storm the Sorrow (a really f'd up way of saying weather the storm)

Along the way I find myself
To be confined within me
My place where all the others mind to interfere

To press the meaning of it all
To overcome my limits
And dance away from any void and empty tasks

The storm is wild
The storm is high
I can’t survive the storm

Believe yourselves and look away
From all the thrive within you
Leave all your worries at the door
And drift away

I’ve tried to appear into the core
But could not storm the sorrow
My hollow heart has bled me dry, left me to stray

Another time
Without a chance
Condemned me wrong
Send me to heaven

Intertwine the lines
And swim beneath the dark
Realize the pain we’re living
Dreamer as it need reweaving

In the memories of the deep enough to know
Centuries of dreams unending
Another way of you led tears when someone had betrayed

No time to ever go to waste
It’s not that complicated
You’re free to live your life at ease
No more restrain

No heat for shadows on your way
That try to steal your laughter
Your lights will drive them all away
Be confident

Will i refrain
Can i repent
Will you be there
Your eyes have paced
Where i’m alone in ire <--obviously placed to rhyme and is nonsensical

Intertwine the lines
And swim beneath the dark
Realize the pain we’re living
Dreamer as it need reweaving

In the memories of the deep enough to know
Centuries of dreams unending
Another way of you led tears when someone had betrayed

WTF IS THIS?! It is a long string of misused cliches not even put together in a remotely intelligible way. Ugh..

Wow you fucked me up, girl. That's the most embarrassing thing I've read in a long time.

I keep trying to remember the made-up lyrics that the Tp_Opeth_Fan troll used to have as his sig that he once started as a thread on their forum. Something about dark chariots, this song made me think of it, except it was real.

People keep saying how great those lyrics are and asking me to sing the song but every time I read the lyrics I come a step closer to prematurely stroking out. And, I think if I attempted to cover it my accompaniment would be my own dry heaves

Plenty of poorly done things don't bother me much..but writing and lyrics can really put me off.

I would say Whoracle tops anything (else) by IF and all of DT's stuff. However the two bands were pretty much rivals in the early day, having large quantities of brilliance. Nowadays although I consider Dark Tranquillity's (recent) music to be pedestrian, over produced and mundane it still shit's all over the trendy mallcore emo shit that IF has turned into.

In Flames is also a terrible live band.

Wait what?!? I have seen them four times, and I can say that there are only three bands that top their live performance: Dark Tranquillity, Sabaton and Pain of Salvation. I only saw one of their concerts having bad sound quality, but I blame that on the venue, considering that any band I've seen there had bad sound quality there and way better just about everywhere else.

By the way, if we're talking lyrics, try this:

Pain of Salvation - Iter Impius

I woke up today
Expecting to find all that I sought
And climb the mountains of the life I bought
Finally I'm at the top of every hierarchy
Unfortunately there is no one left
But me

I woke up today
To a world that's ground to dust, dirt and stone
I'm the king upon this withering throne
I ruled every forest, every mountain, every sea
Now there're but ruins left to rule for me
And... you see, it beckons me;
Life turned its back on us
How could you just agree?
...how? I just don't see...

I woke up today
To a world devoid of forests and trees
Drained of every ocean, every sea
Just like a useless brick upon the shore
The morning after the storm
That swept the bridge away
Relentless tide
No anger
Just this relentless time
That calls us all on
But...

I'm never crossing that line
Leaving this world behind
I will stay on my own
On this bloodstained throne
I rule the ruins and wrecks
And the dust, dirt and stone
I rule rage rod and rattling of bones

Solo

I am on my own
I am all alone
Everything is gone
Stuck forever here
Already cold

I'm never crossing that line
Leaving this world behind
I will stay on my own
On this bloodstained throne...

I'm never crossing that line
Leaving this world behind
I will stay on my own
On this bloodstained throne...

I'm never crossing that line
Leaving this world behind
I will stay on my own
On this bloodstained throne
I rule the ruins and wrecks
And the dirt and the dust and the stone
I'm the ruler of rage rod and rust
And the rattling of bones
Ruler of ruin
I rule the ruins (ad lib)

I'm never crossing that line
Leaving this world behind
I will stay on my own
On this bloodstained throne
I rule the ruins and wrecks
And the dirt and the dust and the stone
I'm the ruler of rage rod and rust
And the rattling of bones
Ruler of ruin
I rule the ruins (ad lib)

In Flames is or at least was a really good gig to go to. I saw them shortly after Come Clarity and it was great. They were touring with Lamb of God, Children of Bodom, Slayer and someone else I cannot recall at the moment and were by far the best that evening.

I have the live CD they released once upon a time (the Japan one) and other stuff. I've never caught them live, as they postponed or cancelled the one time I got tix to see them many years ago.

I guess they got better, cuz my bro-skis have seen them multiple times and vouch for my impression from their recorded live stuff, either on CD or DVD.

Are you guys serious that people out there actually think IF is in the same league as DT? I mean, I like DT a lot but I don't consider myself partisan or an IF hater. It's just... you know... since Soundtrack... they don't really write good music. There. I've said it. Their singer is not very good either. THERE. I'VE SAID IT.

We're not talking Children of Bodom or the Haunted-type overrated here. But IF is just a good band. I think DT is one of the better metal bands out there...

Yeah, IF is good and I do like the new stuff, but way out of DT's league. 'Nuff said.
