Is Orchid the best Opeth Album?

Regarding drumming and bass: it isn't (or damn well shouldn't be) about talent, it's (or damn well should be) about fit. Anders' drumming and Johan's bass fits Orchid (and Morningrise) like something that fits a damn sight better than a mere glove. Listen to when Martin L played Forest of October or Advent live and you'll easily notice the difference. And I hate to think what Orchid and Morningrise would have sounded like with Martin M's style of bass. But it works the other way around too: the Martins' bass and drumming fit the later albums better than the style of Anders and Johan would've done. The only exception is Damnation: since Anders is such a big fan of jazz, if I remember correctly, it would've been interesting to see what he would've made of a mellow album.

Also, Johan played his bass really high on his chest live, which is funny to watch.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Orchid isn't the best; it's a lowly second.

dammit, I wanna be able to hear the awsomeness of Orch and Morn.
Alls I here is bad production and songs that aren't as accomplished as
the later stuff. I know the greatness is there but I can't hear it.
Someone help an old fart!!! How do I listen?

maybe my ears have gone bad from listening to too many early 90's black metal cds, but I think orchid/morningrise sound fine? Not as good as the other albums, but its not unbearable or extremely muddy sounding the way others are making it out to be?

I like Orchid, but it's my least favorite album by them, if the new one isn't. Under the Weeping Moon is just kind of dumb, and the overall quality of the songs isn't THAT great though there are some wonderful moments, don't get me wrong. Morningrise just feels like it's light years ahead, so much more amazing.

orchid rules, i dont care what anyone says bout the production, its perfectly audiable and lets face it, anyone who has done home recording of their own band or whatever has heard a lot worse, plus i think it builds a kind of eerie atmosphere, particularly at the start of IMSWS.

maybe im the only one who thinks this, but there is something about the first two Orchid tracks that sounds different to any other Opeth song, maybe its just me lol.

Orchid is fucking brilliant and beautiful, and I love the way the drums and bass sound. I love that old-schoolish/low quality/garage sound, and I think "Orchid" showcases that sound very well. I notice alot of people don't like that low-quality/"poor" production sound. To me, it's not low quality or poor-sounding, because I love it so much. But it is how that particular production (sound) is described. Now I'm just rambling....

But yes, I would say Orchid is defenitely up there, alongside "My Arms Your Hearse" and "Ghost Reveries".

Orchid was the perfect introduction to the metal world Opeth could've possibly given us. No one was prepared for an album like this, being so equally brutal and beautiful in such a unique way. Not to mention being one of the only BM albums to get away with such brutality hidden behind such a beautiful album cover. How many bands have come out with such a strong and mature first record right from the beginning?

interesting that i'm not the only person who thinks of orchid as more of a black metal album. actually i think of morningrise and my arms, your hearse as closer to black metal as well.

Someone's making sense at last.

The bass and drums in Orchid/ Morningrise are out of this world.

For all the technical proficiency that Mendez and Lopez might have, they lack in the personality that Farfalla and Nordin brought to the fore.
