Is there anything new out there in the metal world?

I was feeling the same way. Metal was growing a bit stale. Then I decided to go to the instrumental side.

Planet X is amazing. (their getting Allan Holdsworth on their new album!!!!)
Spastic Ink
Twisted Into Form's new album is inspiring as is the new Zero Hour EP
Lye By Mistake are taking fusion elements to the "core" arena

Actually, since listening to a lot of jazz/fusion, my metal side has been inspired to throw that into the metal click.

Haha, I know you know what's up my man.

While not all of it is brand new, some of the better stuff that I have stumbled upon lately is...

Alarum - Eventuality
Psycroptic - Symbols of Failure
Gory Blister - Skymorphosis

Then again I clearly have different tastes than most.
I'm disgusted by anything suggesting "core" in any shape or form and I am finding melodic death metal and everybody who tries to do something "new" with it mind numbingly boring.....:Puke:

Send me a PM about working together on something new - I'm actually looking for people to work with me on a twenty-minute-long grindcore cover of I Touch Myself by the Divinyls and I still need everything but guitars and vocals. If that works out we can plot to take over the world with absurd-metal nonsense and I'm sure that can turn interesting.

Ditch Media Player. Get iTunes. Ready?

OK. Here's some bands to check if you haven't already:

Mnemic
Raunchy
Engel
Sybreed
Threat Signal
Dir En Grey
Porcupine Tree (for the ambient / prog side of things.)

you know, they are kinda psuedo-nu metalish but i really like their last 2 cds:vulgar and withering to death. Such a unique and fresh sounding band. From one song they sound like noisy post hardcore, in another they sound like poppy japanese anime theme songs. I recommend you check them out, they use a fair bit of synth/sampling too.

also try disarmonia mundi, between the buried and me, or akercocke.

And I'm assuming everyone has heard Scar Symmetry. Easily one of the best bands I've heard in the last 10 years.

Dude ... i was thinking this EXACT same thing. I just recently found these guys and I am UBER impressed with them.

Both albums are awsome. Although i like Pitch Black Progress a bit more. The caliber of musicianship is just stellar !!!

I actually played with the Divinyls :heh: many moons ago when my ex-gf was Christina's (the pig-ugly singer) PA.

Dagoba! One of the best bands I heard in the last year.
Awesome Drummer, Very very very very good songs and Tue Madsen production.
And Vortex from Dimmu Borgir special guest in 2 songs

I think ICS Vortex from Arcturus would be a better description, as he does vocals on the two guest tracks ;) Afaik he just plays the bass in Dimmu.

I've only said "Vortex from Dimmu Borgir"...what's wrong?

Black Neon Bob, I think Dagoba are a lot "into your preferences"..fast stuff, modern stuff, melodic stuff with piano.
Check them out!

right on dude......yeah sikth is just so amazing one of the tightest band i have ever heard

SikTh, as previously mentioned - maybe even Textures if you've not heard them (doubtful, being from where you are ;))

Gojira is AMAZING, and so is Arcturus, albeit a bit more Avante-Garde.
