Isolation Cabs

I'm starting to consider an iso cab for my apt.
This Randall looks good to me as it comes with a celestion V30.
Anyone have any experiences with it?

Good question.

I read one review that said an sm57 doesn't sound good on it because of the speaker being boxed in.

I haven't tried the isocab, but generally people here have posted that they are not capable of sounding as good as a miked 4x12.

This would be a huge asset to me if you can get even decent sounds from it!

My instinct and experience tells me that using a THD HotPlate and AltiVerb impulse responses is a better way to go if you want the best tone possible while keeping things quiet for your neighbors. Still, nothing beats a miked cab. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.

Yep. In the past I've rented or borrowed amps & cabs and taken them down to a cheap rehearsal room and re-amped previously recorded DI tracks with decent results. Saves the neighbours and you get a mic recorded cab for little cost.

Everybody's X said on HC that he has it and likes it but then he had another post that said it sounded like crap but I don't know if he was refering to the box or his playing at the time. Chime in Everybody's X!

I kinda get the impression that it may depend on the mic being used.

yeah, Reamp or maybe, build an Isolating barrier for a 4x12? That and a hotplate might work for your situation.

damageplans last record if i am correct slipnot used them live too

i think there not as good as i thought you lose lots of frequencies with
the isocab i now just run the signal back through a 2*12 or 4*12 cab sound better imo

They can be boxy if you come at them like they are a 4x12 in a room which they aren't. If you deal with the boxiness with selective cuts IMO you can get usable sounds with it. I wont say great sounds because I can only base this on my on work with it and I am not going to call my recordings "great" because that would make me a douchebag HAH

Hear/judge/decide for your self IMO in can be absolutely fine in the right hands, which may or may not be mine

EX, it sounds awesome, don't get me wrong, but it has this inherent 'thin' quality to it, and almost sounds POD'ish. Do you know what I mean? It just lacks the power, balls, and girth of a 4x12.

well I would be inclined to think it is more in my engineering than in the cab itself, but then it is NOT a 4x12 and isnt going to ever sound like it is.
I am working on it.
Point is,
I am reamping guitars at 2:30 in the morning with a cranked marshall head in my basement. My wife is upstairs asleep. My neighbors are oblivious. Life is good. Is it ideal? No, is it useful? Definitely

Sounds very good to me. When you said, "If you deal with the boxiness with selective cuts", I'm assuming that means cuts with eq? Also that quote tells me that it doesn't sound out of control horrible before the cuts.?
