It's over....

Well, this is old news that I just became aware of so I think there are plenty who haven't heard it yet.

Now that Nightwish has outsold themselves over in Europe they are readily equipped to do the same here in North America. I just read that they signed with the infamous Roadrunner Records earlier this month (record company known for outselling bands such as Slipknot, Cradle of Filth, and Killswitch Engage). They plan on releasing Once on the record label here in NA and are currently on a huge headlining tour here in NA.

I don't know if I am the only one who hadn't heard this until just now but I always had the feeling that it was going happen with Nightwish. There is even a little interview with them on the Roadrunner site and the last question proves what most of us thought would happen, that question was: "How do you guys feel about being compared to bands such as Evanescence and Lacuna Coil?". Give it a few months and you will see them on MTV and you can get one of their shirts at your local Hot Topic. If you think I am sounding whiny and somewhat selfish then you are damn right! :P

I don't think you have anything to worry about. The NW show in NYC, I was expecting a good chunk of the people there to be hot topic mall goth posers like at the Bodom/Iced Earth show, but actually it was a pretty metal crowd. The goths were in a vast vast minority. At their heart Nightwish is still a powermetal band, and unless they completely abandon that, which I doubt they will, I don't think you have anything to be concerned about.

i think everyone should just drop the fuckin' bitching. If they release good albums, go fuckin' buy them. If they release shit like the majority of once, then don't. who cares?

I don't really care I think Nightwish kick ass and if they get popular than they deserve it.

I am not above to listening to mainstream music, it just so happens that most of today's mainstream is shit. Maybe Nightwish might open some young minds up to some different styles of music.

it'll be a little wierd if they do get mainstream popularity, dunno what to think. Theres always that Elitist feeling of not wanting to share a band with those creepy little goths, but at the same time you wish for their success and showing the world what they can do. We'll see what happens.

They might get popular but the last album was kind of expiremental, I wouldn't say it's selling out at all. Mainstream bands aren't allowed to expirement. I know Ben Moody left Evanescence beecause he didn't want to be mainstream. I seriously think the band is screwed because he was the head writer. Like I said I actually like them. I do agree though that most mainstream sucks.

I hope you are right Yngvai X, but they still haven't been signed with Roadrunner but maybe a whole month thus far so the label hasn't really had enough time to really promote them or anything. I mainly get angry at the fact that these mainstreamers don't even give a band a chance until the industry has fed it to them. The people who will suddenly like Nightwish when Roadrunner starts to feed them to them wouldn't even give them a chance before when very few people had heard of them, and if they did listen to them at that time they would probably still criticize them.

TheOdyssey: How is the new NW album so bad? I admit that I haven't heard the whole album yet, but of the 3 or so songs I have heard they all seemed to be the same basic NW formula as it was with their previous albums. Even the more pop friendly Nemo was pretty typical NW in my opinion.

I hope he doesnt mind me answering this for him, but he doesn't like the fact that theres so much orchestra all over the album.

Yes the orchestra and choir. I like the concept, but they overdo it IMO and it doesn't sound like they are doing the songs. Plus the club beat on i wish i had an angel... that pisses me off. lol

The club beat on "I Wish Had An Angel" is the only think I like about this album.. the orchestra was really a bad idea. of course, I only like about 3 Nightwish songs total...

I think it is funny that some people talk about how they wish SyX would do all their music to an orchestra but now that a band has done that a lot of people don't like the way it sounds. Might make some think twice about wanting SyX to use a full orchestra! Well, I can't judge the NW album until I hear the whole thing. I know some people who didn't really like NW but do like the new album so I will have to see for myself. I do however frown at hearing the fact that "I Wish I Had an Angel" has a dance beat to it...

The thing about Nightwish... is that the band disappears for minutes at a time while you hear this boring and pointless orchestral interlude... I just don't understand it. I like it when an orchestra is used to bolster the music... like say, Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime".. but not when it becomes the focal point.

You hit the nail on the head my friend. Symphony x would use a full orchestra to enhance what they have. I just feel like this album is more Orchestra featuring nightwish... sorta. And the club beat, though it's catchy, i don't really like the use of it. it sounds like someone remixed a nightwish track, but through some unfortunate series of events, the remix ended up on the actual album.

Back to the point of the thread, just because they are somewhat popular (though i doubt they will ever be big here... who knows) does not take away from the first three or four albums that were good. It does not mean they will never release another good album either. Remember, just because they are on roadrunner here doesn't necissarily mean anything. They are on spinefarm in finland and nuclear blast in the rest of europe and to my understanding, those are metal labels. just because roadrunner sucks....
Also, keep in mind that Morbid Angel is (was? I dont' know the current status) on Roadrunner along with slipknot and nickelback and they are still pretty much death metal. I know also that deicide was at one point, though i think they are off now. Roadrunner means 2 things: Jack and Shit.
