The elitists on GS are obviously going to prefer the Neumann, but personally I liked the darker character of the modded Rode over the U87.

Hi Folks, my Googlebot heard my name led me here. Thanks for the props.

You know its been funny over at Gearslutz - more people have identified my mod'd NT1a as being the 70's vintage "purple badge" U 87 than the other way 'round.

Oh, regarding the price. This mod includes a complete reworking of the body, fitting a new more open headbasket, installation of my MJE-K47 capsule, addition of a capsule base diffuser and signal path upgrade. Way cheaper than buying a 70's U 87 if you don't absolutely need the Neumann badge to show off.

Thanks for listening!

nice to see you michael. tempted by this mod.. would certaintly mean blowing the dust and cobwebs off my Nt1

... it's even more enticing if you have an NT-1A sitting around collecting dust like me!

Thanks for the welcome.

This is the main value proposition - invest a bit more in a mic that has been benched (a total loss) and have it become a go-to, high-value player. The alternative is to sell it off (a partial loss) and buy another stock mic.

So while most of the business that comes my way is from folks who are sending benched mics, there is a small but steady percentage of people who intentially buy new mics (the Apex 460 most often) and have them shipped directly to me from the retailer for mods.

I'm so tempted to send mine in, it has been mounted to the truss of the venue I work at as a crowd mic for about a year, it'd be nice to get some other use out of it  but at the same time I am really wanting a Profire 2626

If anything this has tempted me to experiment on the baskets of other mics .
Im sure these low tech mods are worth a try .

I can vouch for Mr. Joly doing some great work. I have five microphones that he's modded for me. I plan on doing the NT1a mods as soon as I have the money laying around.
