Kamelot/Halcyon Way/EbS Rollcall!

Kamelot should remember they have more than 2 albums. Other than that, great show. EBS the song I heard while walking in sounded great ;) I hate to be critical.. but Sean were you not feeling well?

p.s. I think you are nuts showing up to a venue 2 hours before doors open hoping to get a spot on the rail... especially at a small venue.

Oh yeah, Sean has an upper respiratory infection. Plus....no monitors. =)

I do it ALL the time. When a band I really want to see is playing the Masquerade, if the doors open at 7 then I get there at 4.

Hell, when Blind Guardian played the Roxy, doors opened at 7:30 and I was there at 2 or so  I HAD to be on the rail for that :goggly:

Sorry I missed you at the show last night, man. Hope you enjoyed it! I sure did!:kickass:

Wow...even more insight into the opening bands issue. Hoyt told me that Kamelot had basically commandeered all the channels on the board and disallowed the openers from having a full gamut of audio channels. That sucks, as I believe we didn't get the full experience from opening bands that are far from unprofessional. EbS's riffs are fucking killer, I can tell you that...I wish I could have heard either vocalist clearly all the way through...but whaddyagunnado.

I could tell that the openers' guitars were not PA'd, as I could clearly hear the stage right guitarists more clearly b/c that's where I was standing. I'll be looking forward to seeing both openers again, somewhere...someday...hopefully without the crew problems.
---
I can also attest to the fact that the security/queueing issue was one of the worst jobs I've ever seen (if not the worst). My friend Adam and I got there a little before 5...fully expecting to be up front, especially since when we got there, there were about 7 people there. Some cut in front, but that was okay, we still had it. Then as a previous poster pointed out, the staff divided the line and instructed people way back in the line to make a double line right up front...and proceeded to let them into the venue at the same time as the hardcore early birds who had been there for a couple more hours...ludicrous. My experience wasn't ruined, as I made a push (with Adam) to stand tall and not let our spots be wrenched from us and we did end up at the front, but some of our early arrival companions obviously did not...so I hope the Masq gets its act together next time, because what they did made no logical sense whatsoever and was a complete catastrophe.

Wow, where to really begin?

We get to the Masquerade and find out that the normal people that we're used to that run the Masquerade shows aren't there so we dealt with an entirely different group of people which we were not pleased with considering they weren't being incredibly helpful.

We were given no direction when we got there--we more or less had to play guessing games with the Masquerade, but its to be expected on these bigger shows and everything ended up fine once we figured out what was going on.

Halcyon Way and EBS got together for a little meeting about 15 minutes before the show started (since we had more than enough time after they decided to push the show back about 30 minutes) weighing all our options, venting our discontents, and cracking jokes about the situation that was sure to doom both of our bands. It really wasn't all that terrible once the show got underway.

That being said and despite the difficult circumstances with the shortage of mics/sound, we had a blast!

The show seemed to go over really well with the audience and we most definitely appreciate our regulars and other ProgPower family that attended the show.

That was probably the best crowd we've had that we didn't know every person in the audience.

Halcyon Way--it was a pleasure. A big thanks and shout out go to you guys for letting us use your cabs and bass rig. We think it helped make the time in between go just a little bit faster.

Even though we weren't able to speak with the whole band we were able to talk to Kamelot's bass player after the show, and he was a class act. He talked to us at length and complimented our performance--It was an awesome experience all around.

I decided to skip this and I had to work anyways...I thought about going after work but it was 9 when I got off and it Kamelot's set would be almost over by the time I got to Atlanta

I regret not going but I was kinda burned out from so many shows recently.....I hope they come back soon
:(

Hey, sorry you couldn't make it; I was hoping to meet you and a few other frequent Forum posters there.

The show was the worst concert experience I have ever had, all thanks to the dumbass staff. We got there at 5pm to get a good spot and to our surprise found that getting there at 7pm actually would have gotten us on the rail. Right at 7 they cut the line in half and moved those people up into a second line with all of us who waited forever. I figured maybe they were gonna put our line in then start on that line, but nah, it was a free for all when the doors opened (20 min late).

The Masquerade has been doing that for a while when they have the waiting numbers to justify it, and have two people to check tickets. Still, if you were in the front of one line, you'd still be close to the front rail afterwards......

So we get a bunch of people in front os us that had gotten there way after us, not that big a deal, whatever...THEN those stupid assholes moved us into a holding room as they weren't ready to let us in, insisting we keep moving to the back so people coming in could fit. Once they packed the room out the just let people stand in the entrance, so when they FINALLY let us in it was a mad rush of pushing from the people that JUST got there and the people that had waited for hours. Needless to say we got a crap spot while others basically walked right in after 7 and got front and center.

That's not completely the Masquerade's fault; Kamelot's soundcheck ran wayyyyyy late. You complained a few seconds ago about the doors opening 20 minutes late....they could have held doors even longer and avoided having to wrap the crowd into Purgatory. Would you have preferred that?

I'm all about supporting the music, but I'll be damned if I go to another show there. Progpower has ruined me I guess, I expect a competent staff and no BS when I go to other shows, what a rude awakening...

I've only had to be shuffled into Purgatory once before due to glitches upstairs and delayed soundchecks.
The band?
Dream Theater.
The Masquerade has many problems as a venue, but not all of the shenanigans that happened on Saturday night were the club's fault.

Hey man! It was great meeting you last night and getting to talk with you for a while! Sorry the Shagrath thing didn't work out, but I know you tried your best.

Actually, according to Glenn, Tom (Youngblood, I assume) was aware of the simultaneous booking six months ago. My 'spy' over at the Tabernacle asked Simen (ICS Vortex) and Mustis about it, though, and neither had any idea about it. :(

When we saw Shagrath come out to the bus at about the same time that Kamelot would have been encoring with "March of Mephisto," we knew it was a no-go.

How was the Dimmu set, BTW?

Due to the Kamelot show starting so late, I didn't get to the Tabernacle until after Dimmu's set ended...so, with no interest whatsoever in seeing Danzig's set (he is an asshole), I handed my two comp tickets to my friend Ripper and his boss, and prepared to head back to the Masquerade. In circling the Tabernacle ('cause you have to), I spotted an open parking space and grabbed it, thinking I could at least see if I could talk to Dimmu after their set. Long story short, I ended up staying until the end of the show there even though I wanted to head back to the Masq. (By the time we got back there, the show was long over and only Shaye, Urban and KimK were still there.)

BUT.....I was the last Atlanta fan to wave goodbye to Dimmu Borgir on their way out: I happened to run up on their tour bus on I-85 right near my exit, and I gave them the metal-horns as I rolled off the highway, eliciting a happy-sounding "honk honk" from their driver.

The sound sucked and they said if they caught you with a camera, they'd take your chip and throw you out!!

Yep, it was posted on signs outside the venue.

BTW, the rules over at the Tabernacle for Danzig (did I mention he's an asshole? Well, he's an asshole) were MUCH stricter: no cameras OR cellphones of any kind. And security was using wands that could detect cigarettes OR a cellphone inside your bag or purse. (!)
No idea what happened to people who rode MARTA and who foolishly brought their cellphones with them (imagine! bringing a cellphone with you to a show!) but there was a big bin in the front of the venue with discarded chains, spikes, metal jewelry, etc. --And probably cellphones, too.

I'd estimate anywhere between 400-550 people?

Glenn said they'd pre-sold about 500 tickets. He was very surprised at the good turnout.

The turnout for Danzig (did I mention he's an asshole?
I did?
Well, he's still an asshole) over at the Tabernacle was no more than 1,100-1,150. They didn't even open the top balcony.

Ahh, revenge is a dish best served scattered, smothered and covered.

Okay y'all! This in no way is a slam to all our great friends from HW & EBS & Progpower USA, okay? In response to the BS from The Masquerade last night. Oh & I wanna say I think it was very, very unprofessional & just downright unfair to treat the opening bands like that & to just basically, in no uncertain terms, to SCREW the shit out of any good sound for the openers!!!:mad: Yeah, nice way to treat, just the opening bands who are warming up the crowd for you!!!!! That was just BS w/ a capital B!!!!! I & my gf & several other friends of mine have just decided to completely boycott the venue completely for lots of reasons, and look y'all I've been going to this particular venue for about a total of 20 years, when it was originally called "The Excelsior Mill" since I first saw Danzig's first show for his first tour in 1988, when Dead Elvis & some band called The Goats opened for him & THE BEST BAND THAT HE USED TO HAVE! I for one, & as I said before several other good friends of mine, I just detest & despise this venue! The place is older than dirt, haven't y'all noticed in heaven how the floor below your feet when people are jumping up & down or pogoing, how that same floor gives just WAY TOO MUCH?! Another thing, whoever runs it or whatever decides that when it's about 90-100 degrees, to NEVER & I MEAN NEVER EVER HAVE THEIR DAMNED CEILING FANS ON!!!!! WTFF?!!! Oh, so I guess it's okay that our stupid asses pay full price for whoever plays there & I guess it's also okay to just let THE FANS, oh ho hum, just the people who buy the bands merch, buy their cds, & stand in line for numerous hours, just to go into a shitty venue to see their favorite band & to roast like you're in a fucking sauna!!!!!!!! I've only made exceptions for a few bands btw. But IMHO, I just think they should tear down, demolish, or implode that fucking shitty eyesore of a venue & PLEASE! PLEASE! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE JUST BUILD SOMETHING WAY BETTER!!!!! ALL
THE METAL FANS DESERVE IT!!!!! WE"VE PUT UP W/ THE BS @ THE MASQUERADE WAY TOO LONG!!!!!!!
That's all I got to say, oh, lastly if ANY of y'all can find anything still good about The Masquerade, other than the fact, that some of the best international & indie bands play there frequently (which I think none of em' should!:mad:) Then feel free to let me know if there is anything good about it okay?
Anywho, Good Night Y'all.

Oh yeah, Sean has an upper respiratory infection. Plus....no monitors. =)

And yet you still pulled it off. A lot of bands would have just bitched about the situation and made excuses, instead of making the best out of what you had to work with. That's the mark of a great band. Sean's illness, the PA situation, only five mics, not being able to hear anything through the monitors, no intro, nothing being piped in, and the lack of cooperation from the venue, but you still put on a great show. All I can say is....wow.

Tell us how you really feel. Actually, this is exactly how I felt about L'amores in Brooklyn. Thankfully it did close, but it's reopened before and they've yet to tear it down, soooo...:err: I've been to the Masquerade, and believe it or not, L'amores was worse!

Anyway, I'm reluctant to start a new topic, but I'm wondering who is going to the Edguy/Kamelot show at B.B. Kings in NYC? Dave, Michelle and I will be there!

A few years ago there were rumors about that. That the owner was planning on selling the land to some developers, but then opening other clubs in other areas. Those rumors circulated for a good while, but I haven't heard anything about it in two years or so.

Hahaha.....thanks man! I can't believe it! A compliment from Sean! =) ROFL....

Oh, and yeah....I'm sure the plans to turn the Masq into condos are long scrapped, as the housing market - and in particular the ITP condo market - suck the big polish sausage. =)

Since you are making your argument against the venue it is easy enough to make the faulty assumption that this (quoted above) is part of that argument.
Just so everyone's perfectly clear on this:
Blame for not letting opening bands use more than a tiny fraction of the PA and such goes to (ta-da!) the anal headliner! :goggly:

Was the headliner trying to make sure that the openers made them look good?

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure that you're looking at this from only one perspective - yours! It's not about making you look bad, or making sure that you make them look good. It's about THEM coming across with the best possible sound, as this is all about them. After all, this is KAMELOT's tour!

You (a local support band) get the chance to open up for them in Atlanta (and as far as I know, without paying tour support for using their stage and their crew - I might be mistaken about that, but you didn't mention that you paid for that) and should be thrilled about that. They set up their sound (spend hours on making sure it's perfect) and they of course do not want anyone changing the settings for that. Once they are done, you can get whatever is left. Apparently 5 channels.

This is the way it works in this businesss. Deal with it or get out ... it's pretty simple actually. Sorry to sound like a prick, but man, you are a LOCAL band that should be happy getting the chance to play in front of THEIR audience, even if that means you have to play "acoustic" in the end.
