I decided to skip this and I had to work anyways...I thought about going after work but it was 9 when I got off and it Kamelot's set would be almost over by the time I got to Atlanta
I regret not going but I was kinda burned out from so many shows recently.....I hope they come back soon
Hey, sorry you couldn't make it; I was hoping to meet you and a few other frequent Forum posters there.
The show was the worst concert experience I have ever had, all thanks to the dumbass staff. We got there at 5pm to get a good spot and to our surprise found that getting there at 7pm actually would have gotten us on the rail. Right at 7 they cut the line in half and moved those people up into a second line with all of us who waited forever. I figured maybe they were gonna put our line in then start on that line, but nah, it was a free for all when the doors opened (20 min late).
The Masquerade has been doing that for a while when they have the waiting numbers to justify it, and have two people to check tickets. Still, if you were in the front of one line, you'd still be close to the front rail afterwards......
So we get a bunch of people in front os us that had gotten there way after us, not that big a deal, whatever...THEN those stupid assholes moved us into a holding room as they weren't ready to let us in, insisting we keep moving to the back so people coming in could fit. Once they packed the room out the just let people stand in the entrance, so when they FINALLY let us in it was a mad rush of pushing from the people that JUST got there and the people that had waited for hours. Needless to say we got a crap spot while others basically walked right in after 7 and got front and center.
That's not completely the Masquerade's fault; Kamelot's soundcheck ran wayyyyyy late. You complained a few seconds ago about the doors opening 20 minutes late....they could have held doors even longer and avoided having to wrap the crowd into Purgatory. Would you have preferred that?
I'm all about supporting the music, but I'll be damned if I go to another show there. Progpower has ruined me I guess, I expect a competent staff and no BS when I go to other shows, what a rude awakening...
I've only had to be shuffled into Purgatory once before due to glitches upstairs and delayed soundchecks.
The band?
Dream Theater.
The Masquerade has many problems as a venue, but not all of the shenanigans that happened on Saturday night were the club's fault.
Hey man! It was great meeting you last night and getting to talk with you for a while! Sorry the Shagrath thing didn't work out, but I know you tried your best.
Actually, according to Glenn, Tom (Youngblood, I assume) was aware of the simultaneous booking six months ago. My 'spy' over at the Tabernacle asked Simen (ICS Vortex) and Mustis about it, though, and neither had any idea about it.
When we saw Shagrath come out to the bus at about the same time that Kamelot would have been encoring with "March of Mephisto," we knew it was a no-go.
How was the Dimmu set, BTW?
Due to the Kamelot show starting so late, I didn't get to the Tabernacle until after Dimmu's set ended...so, with no interest whatsoever in seeing Danzig's set (he is an asshole), I handed my two comp tickets to my friend Ripper and his boss, and prepared to head back to the Masquerade. In circling the Tabernacle ('cause you have to), I spotted an open parking space and grabbed it, thinking I could at least see if I could talk to Dimmu after their set. Long story short, I ended up staying until the end of the show there even though I wanted to head back to the Masq. (By the time we got back there, the show was long over and only Shaye, Urban and KimK were still there.)
BUT.....I was the last Atlanta fan to wave goodbye to Dimmu Borgir on their way out: I happened to run up on their tour bus on I-85 right near my exit, and I gave them the metal-horns as I rolled off the highway, eliciting a happy-sounding "honk honk" from their driver.
The sound sucked and they said if they caught you with a camera, they'd take your chip and throw you out!!
Yep, it was posted on signs outside the venue.
BTW, the rules over at the Tabernacle for Danzig (did I mention he's an asshole? Well, he's an asshole) were MUCH stricter: no cameras OR cellphones of any kind. And security was using wands that could detect cigarettes OR a cellphone inside your bag or purse. (!)
No idea what happened to people who rode MARTA and who foolishly brought their cellphones with them (imagine! bringing a cellphone with you to a show!) but there was a big bin in the front of the venue with discarded chains, spikes, metal jewelry, etc. --And probably cellphones, too.
I'd estimate anywhere between 400-550 people?
Glenn said they'd pre-sold about 500 tickets. He was very surprised at the good turnout.
The turnout for Danzig (did I mention he's an asshole?
I did?
Well, he's still an asshole) over at the Tabernacle was no more than 1,100-1,150. They didn't even open the top balcony.
Ahh, revenge is a dish best served scattered, smothered and covered.
