Least depressing opeth album

^agreed. the porn mustache song is pretty uplifting with its major keys and 3/4 time.

I don't know. I listen to music that a lot of people would term "morbid", but I don't see it that way. I'm not a depressed person at all and maybe I don't tune into the music from that aspect like some may. I don't know.

I simply like darker music and the structures they tend to create songs with. I like my music to have mystery, depth, and be very dynamic. That's also not to say that I don't like "cleaner" music, like Dream Theater and Threshold.

In summation, I don't find Opeth depressing at all. Maybe a bit dreary, but ultimately dynamic and full of mystery. That's what makes me happy.

Most Depressing-Mourningrise
Least Depressing-Damnation

i cant believe some of you find opeth to be not depressing at all...i'd agree not all of their songs are that way but come on...take "dirge for november..." it's probably the greatest song written about suicide. the whole concept along with all of its lyrics is so depressing, sad and bleak.

i find ALL the songs on MAYH to be truly depressing (and tend to think of that album as a whole), for instance.

Nope, sorry. I like the music, so it doesn't depress me. That poprock shit I see all over the place does.

I don't know, like I said, I'm not a depressed person and if I enjoy music, the music doesn't depress me. Perhaps some key into that side of their psyche. I don't know.

I got your point and I'm starting to think the same. Totally right and best record ever.

Morningrise is the most depressive, especially To Bid You Farewell, but that also has special meaning to me.

Deliverance is the least depressive. A Fair Judgement used to make me sad though, though its one of their best songs.

I don't think Opeth have any truly uplifting/shiney happy/puppydog/rainbow/gumdrop music in their catalogue, but I don't feel depressed during/after listening.

I guess if I had to pick the album that stands out as least "depressing," I'd go with Still Life, even though the story and concept of it as a whole is very depressing, there also seems to be a theme of hope running through it all, which is not as pronounced on other albums (though that is not to say it isn't there).

The most "depressing" album (I know there's a thread for this, but it seems to have run its course and I'm no necromancer) to me is Blackwater Park, although Damnation/Deliverance is/are a close second. What's funny is that Blackwater Park, over the course of many months of listening to Opeth, has usurped the "uplifting" album Still Life as my favorite.

And a quick note: Everyone using the word "depressive" is bothering me for some reason, like it isn't a real word. "Depressing just seems more correct (even though I'm pretty sure they are interchangable in this context). Am I the only one?

^^haha

i'm with demoke; i think still life is mostly dealing with anger...i remember that thread a while back about the albums relating to seasons, and i always see still life as "summer" so maybe that's related...as opposed to orchid and mayh, i see those as more autumn/winter.

from toothpastefordinner.com: "i used to think the smiths were depressing, but now i think they're pretty upbeat. this means either i am a happier person now or i'm so depressed morissey actually sounds like he's doing pretty good in a couple of his songs."

Demoke, how come you think they meet after they die?

I always thought SL ends with the main protagonist (Jack Lantern bearer) getting killed in public and that's it.

That said, I think SL and MAYH are very depressing.

The guy in the MAYH story may never enter heaven. He's trapped on earth without his lover forever.

And SL is also insane. The guy waits for 15 (!) years and comes back to get back to his beloved girl and in the end the both of them are dead as well as some others just because of his religious beliefs. :(

Poor atheist ..

To answer the thread's question, m pick os Orchid because of that ridiculous dance part in "Under the weeping moon". You know.. when the tension dies.

Sucky english but bear with me.

I haven't read into the still life story completely, I know the protagonist dies in the end. I'm not sure if he enters heaven with his lover though, could be.
