WMP sucks schlong, go for VLC Media Player instead. Free, easy to use, no codecs needed, doesn't use a lot of resources, etc.

For media players, I've found that Media Player Classic is a decent bet for Windows. That, or MPlayer (which is better on Linux though.)

You've obviously never tried VLC. 'tis superior.
