Los gemelos Tipton (Jasun, guitarra, y Troy, bajo) montaron esta banda en la Bay Area de San Francisco (mítico lugar desde donde comenzó la invasión thrash de mediados/finales de los 80) en 1993 y desde entonces solo han conocido un camino, el de la ascensión de popularidad entre los miles de fanáticos del metal progresivo.
Para este disco, la banda ha contado con un nuevo vocalista, Chris Salinas (POWER OF OMENS, Z-LOT-Z), continuando con lo que ya parece tradición en ellos, cambiar de cantante casi en cada disco (los anteriores fueron Erik Rosvold y Fred Marshall). Y el trabajo que ha desarrollado con ellos es absolutamente matador, un fino estilista de las cuerdas vocales que hará las delicias de todos aquellos que oigáis este impresionante disco.
7 son los temas que la banda nos regala en los 43 minutos que dura el compacto, comenzando con la inicial "Face The Fear", de comienzo hiper técnico. La banda se saca de la manga una introducción de casi 2 minutos donde parece que "pierdan el rumbo" por esa rápida sucesión de variaciones del mismo ritmo, hasta que pone orden y serenidad la voz de Chris. La música toma entonces un cariz super relajado, un colchón perfecto para que el vocalista saque toda su magia, solo rota por breves momentos en los que la banda saca a relucir lo grandes músicos que son.
"The Falcon's Cry" parece querer comenzar como el primer tema, con un ritmo complicado aunque con una entrada brutal de voz, susurrando unas partes y gritando otras. Durante los primeros minutos del tema la banda mantiene esa tónica técnica hasta que, como pasara en el primer corte, se relajen y el vocalista nos muestre un tono a lo Geoff Tate (QUEENSRYCHE) pero "evolucionado". Impresionante el trabajo realizado por todos los músicos, con mención especial para su guitarrista.
"Embrace" es el siguiente corte. Las guitarras de Jasun dominan casi por completo este pequeño tema instrumental, con un acompañamiento de fondo de su vocalista, alargando unas notas hasta el infinito.
"Specs of Pictures Burnt Beyond" marca la mitad del disco. Nuevamente la banda saca su vena técnica para dar comienzo a un tema, con unos rápidos riffs tanto de guitarra como de bajo. Y si en el anterior tema tomábamos nota de la voz de Chris, en este ya nos quitamos el sombrero... qué agudos se marca el chaval!! Acompañado de un brillante y machacón ritmo, el vocalista va desgranando diferentes tonos: susurros, voz normal, voz fina...Nuevamente podríamos apuntar la influencia "Tate" para definir su trabajo, y aunque me pesará admitirlo, Chris supera el trabajo del de QUEENSRYCHE!! Fabuloso. La banda finaliza el tema con unos ritmos algo enmarañados, de pura demostración.
"Zero Hour" es el quinto corte y que por el título, deberíamos tomarlo como el "himno" de la banda. Es un tema de duración corta (algo mas de 2 minutos) y en donde se lucen ambos hermanos sobretodo, ya que es también instrumental. Eso si, no olvidamos el trabajo fastuoso de Mike a la batería, acompañando con maestría a sus compañeros.
"I Am Here" es un corte lento, baladistico. Encima de una melodía acústica, Chris va dibujando unas bonitas estrofas con una voz mas "afectada". Un tema relajante a dueto entre la guitarra y la voz.
Para finalizar este álbum tenemos "Evidence Of The Unseen". Y lo hace intercalando momentos lentos y ambientales con ritmos infra técnicos y cañeros. Chris nos deja otra brutal actuación entre esa multitud de cambios de ritmos, en los que, a veces, debe haberlese hecho difícil el meter su chorro de voz ahí.
Una producción impecable para un disco vital, muy técnico y con grandes actuaciones de todos los músicos.
Personalmente me quedo con la voz (como ya habréis notado), y aunque soy muy "enamoradizo", me daréis la razón cuando caiga en vuestras orejas este discazo.
Solo puedo añadir una palabra mas: PERFECTO

The twins Tipton (Jasun, guitar, and Troy, bass) formed the band in the San Francisco Bay area (where began the thrash invasion of the mid/late 80s) in 1993 and embarked on their ascension of popularity, gaining thousands of progressive metal fans.
For this album, the band inducted new a vocalist, Chris Salinas (POWER OF OMENS, Z-LOT-Z), continuing strong in their musical tradition, changing vocalists on their last album as well (the previous were Erik Rosvold and Fred Marshall). The work they've done on this one is an absolute masterpiece, having the best vocals yet, and the change is permanent.
7 songs, at 43 minutes long, beginning with "Face The Fear", the album begins very technical. The band pulls out of their sleeve an introduction that within 2 minutes, you feel like you can "lose yourself" in the rapid changes and complexity, until serenity is discovered when Chris enters. The music then takes a relaxed tone, a perfect background for the vocalist to work his magic", only breaking in moments to show what amazing musicians they are.
The Falcon's Cry" starts off with intensity like the first song, with a complex rhythm and powerful vocals, whispering some parts and screaming others. During the first part, the band maintains their technical assault until, as with the first cut, they relax and the vocalist shows us a tone similar to Geoff Tate (QUEENSRYCHE) but "evolved". Impressive work by the whole band, with a special mention for the guitarist.
"Embrace" is the next song. The guitars of Jasun this short instrumental song almost completely, with support from vocalist Chris, holding notes out to infinity.
"Specs of Pictures Burnt Beyond" is the title track, and half way point. Once again the band utilizes their technical vein to begin the song, with rapid bass and guitar riffs. And if we took note of the vocals of Chris in the last song, our hats are off on this one... what an amazing performance!! Accompanied by a brilliant riff, the vocalist presents different tones: whispers, normal voice, fine voice...We could again point out the "Tate" influence to define the sound, but we must admit, Chris is superior to the vocalist of QUEENSRYCHE!! Fabulous. The band ends this song with entangled riffs, a pure demonstration.
"Zero Hour" is the fifth and eponymous song, kind of like a "hymn" of the band. In this short song (a little over 2 minutes) both brothers play brilliantly, and it is also another instrumental. Of course, we cannot forget the tremendous job of Mike on drums, a master along with his companions.
"I Am Here" is a slow ballad. On top of an acoustic melody, Chris draws beautiful images with his voice of "emotion". The song relies on a duet of guitar and voice.
The last song on the album is "Evidence Of The Unseen", with slow and ambient moments, and also sections of ultra technicality. Chris does another brutal performance over a multitude of changing rhythms, in which, sometimes, it's a quick blast of voice that seems really hard to acheive over the music.
An impeccable production for an essential disc, very technical and with amazing performances by everyone in the band.
Personally I focus on the vocals (as you noticed), and although I'm "in love with" this album, you'll see why when you hear it! I have only one more word: PERFECT

1993 fue el año escogido por estos chicos de la Bay Area para formar un proyecto a largo plazo. Una banda de metal progresivo, que sin duda sería la sensación, en una época dominada por unas exigencias musicales muy diferentes a las que los hermanos Tipton iban a ofrecernos. Zero Hour significó el nacimiento de una banda que muy pronto se haría notar internacionalmente, con ese estilo personal que les caracterizaría desde sus comienzos.
Probablemente me encuentre ante una de las mejores formaciones de metal progresivo que ha dado el pais del Capitolio. Pocas bandas pueden presumir de mantener la frescura despues de cuatro discos de estudio y de mantenerse tan vivos, musicalmente hablando, como en sus inicios.
Zero Hour presenta "Specs Of Pictures Burnt Beyond", cuarto y hasta la fecha último disco de su carrera, el cual arranca con un inicio más que espectante, "Face The Fear". Guitarras volátiles despidiendo acordes cruzados, casi a modo de introducción de minuto y medio, finiquitada por una brutal aparición del doble bombo y un cantante, Chris Salinas , ex vocalista de Power of Omens, demostrando sus facultades desde las primeras entonaciones. Un corte estupendo de nueve minutos donde nos podemos recrear con riffs rápidos, pequeñas partes instrumentales acústicas, un doble bombo atronador y un cantante muy versátil.
La sucesora "The Falcon's Cry" comienza de una forma mucho más directa. Chris Salinas, nos hace ensordecer con un agudo poderoso, mientras el insaciable Jasun Tipton nos invade con estremecedores riffs, ambos, siempre acompañados por el inconmensurable trabajo de Mike Guy a la bateria. Lo mejor de este tema es la facilidad para dejar a un lado su lado más feroz, y mostrarnos su parte más sinfónica en el último tercio de canción.
"Embrace" és una instrumental que sirve de unión entre la anterior y "Specs Of Pictures Burnt Beyond". Es la más corta del disco, apenas dos minutos y medio, y la más neutral en cuanto a cambios de ritmo se refiere. "Specs Of Pictures Burnt Beyond", es una soberbia demostración de fuerza en todos los aspectos musicales. "Zero Hour", cuya duración es similar a la de "Embrace", es un tema instrumental progresivo lleno de fuerza y habilidad. "I Am Here" supone la sorpresa del compacto, ya que no imaginé jamás escuchar una balada dentro de este álbum. Pausada y melancólica, da un descanso a nuestros oídos acostumbrados al estruendo causado por las canciones anteriores. Un tema perfectamente ejecutado, pese a carecer de las aptitudes progresivas tan propias de la banda; cumpliendo, pese a ello, las expectativas causadas por los cortes anteriores, alimentando la curiosidad de saber como será el final de este excelente disco
"Evidence Of The Unseen", séptima y última canción, en ella Zero Hour despliega todas sus bazas musicales para dejarnos el mejor tema del disco. Una canción compuesta por medios tiempos y grandes ritmos progresivos, enfatizados por la maravillosa capacidad vocal que Chris ha demostrado a lo largo del compacto. Los increíbles cambios de "tempo" amenizan los casi 9 minutos de duración del tema, dejándonos un fantástico sabor de boca.
He de reconocer que hacia mucho tiempo que no disfrutaba de esta manera con un disco de este estilo. Excelente producción y excelentes composiciones, en las cuales, Zero hour han hecho fácil lo que aparentemente parecía muy difícil. Absolutamente recomendado para los amantes del metal progresivo en todas sus vertientes y para aquellos a quienes no les importe arriesgarse con álbums de este estilo.

"Specs Of Pictures Burnt Beyond", es una soberbia demostración de fuerza en todos los aspectos musicales. "Zero Hour", cuya duración es similar a la de "Embrace", es un tema instrumental progresivo lleno de fuerza y habilidad. "I Am Here" supone la sorpresa del compacto, ya que no imaginé jamás escuchar una balada dentro de este álbum. Pausada y melancólica, da un descanso a nuestros oídos acostumbrados al estruendo causado por las canciones anteriores. Un tema perfectamente ejecutado, pese a carecer de las aptitudes progresivas tan propias de la banda; cumpliendo, pese a ello, las expectativas causadas por los cortes anteriores, alimentando la curiosidad de saber como será el final de este excelente disco
"Evidence Of The Unseen", séptima y última canción, en ella Zero Hour despliega todas sus bazas musicales para dejarnos el mejor tema del disco. Una canción compuesta por medios tiempos y grandes ritmos progresivos, enfatizados por la maravillosa capacidad vocal que Chris ha demostrado a lo largo del compacto. Los increíbles cambios de "tempo" amenizan los casi 9 minutos de duración del tema, dejándonos un fantástico sabor de boca.
He de reconocer que hacia mucho tiempo que no disfrutaba de esta manera con un disco de este estilo. Excelente producción y excelentes composiciones, en las cuales, Zero hour han hecho fácil lo que aparentemente parecía muy difícil. Absolutamente recomendado para los amantes del metal progresivo en todas sus vertientes y para aquellos a quienes no les importe arriesgarse con álbums de este estilo.

Prog. guderne Zero Hour leverer på ”Specs Of Pictures Burnt Beyond“ fed tråd, bæredygtige kompositioner, passionsrige melodier og en ny sanger ved navn Chris Salinas. Pladen spænder fra høj energisk teknisk progmetal til melodiske akustiske ballader. Zero Hour skinner på såvel den tekniske som på den emotionelle front. Pladen fremstår ditto mere homogen end som tidligere. Zero Hour har fundet deres egen niche og de skinner. Istedet for at ligge vægten kun på det tekniske, har bandet valgt en mere melodiøs indgangsvinkel. Resultatet er en mere struktureret samt lyttervenlig plade. Chris Salinas vokal er ditto temmelig fed. Han veksler mellem high pitch kraftfuld sang til mere mellow ren sang. På mange måder minder Chris mig om en syntese mellem Mr. Tate (Queensrÿche) og Mr. Adler (Fates Warning), hvilket i sig selv skulle være en lytter værd eller to... Alt ialt er ”Specs Of Pictures Burnt Beyond“en velspillet teknisk samt dynamisk skive, bestående af en masse catchy melodier samt sang i højeste klasse.

One more new singer for ZERO HOUR. This time it's the turn of Chris Salinas to take the microphone of the Tipton Brother's band. And the less we can say is that this vocalist is a really great one ! One more time, there's no place for regrets, cus even if both of previous singers were excellent, Salinas is a damn cool one. His voice can remind of Geoff Tate (QUEENSRYCHE) or Gérard Fois (DREAM CHILD, ETERNAL FLIGHT), that is powerful, melodic and emotionnaly intense. Musically speaking, ZERO HOUR made a full 180°, coming back to something more progressive and less catchy than on 'Fragile Mind' (2005). It's closer to what we used to hear on 'Metamorphosis' for example, that is almost experimental from time to time. The keys almost desappeared from the whole album, and it's maybe calmer than before. This calmer side, together with the very melodic vocal lines give a new breath to the band while keeping the spirit of ZERO HOUR alive at the same time. An excellent album for every single progressive heavy metal addict, a revelation for those who like QUEENSRYCHE and never heard of ZERO HOUR.

ZERO HOUR - Specs of Pictures burnt Beyond (CD) USA March 2007 Mario van Dooren Style: Progressive Metal Running time: 43:12 (Tracks: 7) Zero Hour was formed in 1993 by the brothers Jasun & Troy Tipton; twinbrothers from the Bay Area district in San Fransisco, USA. I discovered the band during their second release "Towers of Avarice" and from that time on I am one of their biggest fans! The band plays extreme technical/progressive metal which can be compared with bands like Watchtower & Spiral Architect (do they still exist?). On their latest album "A Fragile Mind" I thought that the band was going to be more mainstream because I heard a lot of Nevermore-a-like passages back in their songs. On this new album the band is going back to their earlier sound and the comparison with their second album "Towers of Avarice" is great. Well, personally i'm very glad with this development because "Towers of Avarice" still is my fav. Zero Hour album. Plus to this new album is the fact that the band is suited with newcomer vocalist Chris Salinas (ex-Power of Omen) who has a great voice and a very wide range! A welcome addition!! Musically everything sounds perfect and also productional I cant complain at all. Producer Dino Alden did a hell of a job! Fav. songs on this album: 'The Falcon's Cry', 'Evidence of the Unseen'& the instrumental 'Zero Hour'. People who think that Dream Theater is progressive should listen to this stuff!!
