I kinda believe the rumors about him doing coke now.

On a personal level, I just hope he finds a way to survive through whatever it is that ails him.
On a band level I have a few points. For one, Martin Lopez is a special drummer whom I find unique in the metal world. There is something in his playing that transcends metal/jazz/fusion/etc and makes Martin a drummer without equal. There is a certain emotion and feel to his music that I've never heard elsewhere, and I believe the song Deliverance is the culmination of all that is Martin Lopez. But, luckily for us fans of Opeth, even without Martin Lopez, Opeth is still Opeth. Many times when a vital person in a band leaves, there is truly no replacing that person and the band either dissipates or changes. In seeing Martin Axenrot on the last tour, Opeth was Opeth. Sure, that Lopez feel wasn't there, but the Opeth feel certainly was, and the sound was just as Opethian as ever. And MArtin Axenrot has done a phenominal job "filling the shoes" of a Martin Lopez and allowing Opeth to continue without missing a beat.

steel102 said:no, read the bio, he was asked to join the band and was bassist or smth. then when the rest of the band quit, he revived the opeth name and took over for guitars+vocals.
Amarantus said:Well, if Lopez does quit for some reason. I wonder if Mendez would quit seeing as though Lopez was the one who pretty much got him in the band.
This fucking blows.
