Lopez

It's very sad about Martin Lopez.

On a personal level, I just hope he finds a way to survive through whatever it is that ails him.

On a band level I have a few points. For one, Martin Lopez is a special drummer whom I find unique in the metal world. There is something in his playing that transcends metal/jazz/fusion/etc and makes Martin a drummer without equal. There is a certain emotion and feel to his music that I've never heard elsewhere, and I believe the song Deliverance is the culmination of all that is Martin Lopez. But, luckily for us fans of Opeth, even without Martin Lopez, Opeth is still Opeth. Many times when a vital person in a band leaves, there is truly no replacing that person and the band either dissipates or changes. In seeing Martin Axenrot on the last tour, Opeth was Opeth. Sure, that Lopez feel wasn't there, but the Opeth feel certainly was, and the sound was just as Opethian as ever. And MArtin Axenrot has done a phenominal job "filling the shoes" of a Martin Lopez and allowing Opeth to continue without missing a beat.

I'm a huge Lopez fan, too. I hope he overcomes whatever it is that ails him. It doesn't seem good when Mikael is either clueless or withholding info.

Anyhow, with Axe, let's keep in mind that he would no longer be "filling shoes" if he became a full member. He'd do his own thing, and none of us have heard Axe do his own Opethian thing. Who knows? We might be surprised.

lopez fan here. im sure axe is a great drummer and that but lopez's style fits opeth perfectly. hell, for me, lopez's style stands on top of everyone else in the metal world (together with danny carey). so i see this as a big LOSS for my favorite band.

QFT. I have seen/heard many bootlegs since Axe started playing, and the band sounds fine IMO. Of course, I am not a drummer, so maybe I am not picking up on the subtleties, but it is certain, at least, that Axe does not detract from the sound. Not to rag on Axe or anything, but I think he has been playing in mainly straight-up metal bands for many years now, so Opeth, with their softer moments and whatnot, was probably something kinda new for him. I mean, if you read the session diary for MAYH, Mikael says how it was difficult to get Lopez to stop constantly aggresively attacking the drums at first(he was in amon amarth before). Either way, I think Axe has been doing a phenomenal job and can only improve from here on in.

It wouldn't be the same with out him.

And it wasn't the same when Mikael took over vocals, or when Per joined the band or when the Martins joined in the first place. Thats logic, and that will help you.

Were any of those changes bad for the band?

I just get fed up of this almost boy band like fanhood. We all love the line up that defines Opeth, but its not like he is the only drummer in the world, no one wants to see him go, but I am guessing if we were fans back in the day we would have said the same thing about the other guys who have come and gone. Its not like Take That splitting up, there is no need for a helpline, its out of our hands, its out of the bands hands and its even as far as we know out of both Martins hands as to what happens.

Not aimed specifically at the one person who posted that, it just seems there is a lot of this "world will end if anything changes" opinions going around.

no, read the bio, he was asked to join the band and was bassist or smth. then when the rest of the band quit, he revived the opeth name and took over for guitars+vocals.

That really blows for the band, and Lopez. If it's not drug related, which I'm thinking it has to be (due to the vagueness during interviews), then I hope he gets better. If it's drug related, I still hope he gets better, however he had to have known what he was getting into, IF it's drug related.

Man this sucks !

Listen to the Opeth discography with Lopez and you'll see that Opez' playing is more and more subtle, creative and technical !

Let's hope for a miraculous return but the future seems clouded !

well... this is shit news... all i can say is i hope he gets better and i hope they all manage to work things out so that everybody is happy and healthy.

I don't believe(suprises me),people compare Axe and Lopez.

Lopez is more than a mere death metal drummer. I believe he is the best drummer in the
metal music industry. His contribution to Opeth is undiscussible. The people who think,
Axe will be able to replace his position, has ever paid attention his technique? he is neither
as fast as Lopez nor puts emotions into his playing the way Lopez does. He screws/messes up
all the slow parts. Don't forget this, Axe is just a regular metal drummer and he does his
job. Beating up the drum does not make a somebody better drummer.

I believe, Lopez is the most important person after Mikael Akerfeldt in Opeth. If Lopez
does not continue, it won't be as same as Anders leaving. The Metal world will lose the most
precious drummer.

I hope you may recover soon and return back!

By the way, I believe some people need to listen the albums after Morningrise had been release.
Especially Damnation and GR should be listen again.

Man this is pretty shit news. I feel sad for Lopez, such a great drummer and his passion is ripped away from him. I hope he's able to pull himself together and get better someday. Lopez is amazing.
