hey everyone
first off let me begin by saying merry xmas to all :D
as a result of this festive holiday i now have enough money to buy an M-audio profire 2626.
i was just interested to hear what everyone hear thinks of it? and the pros and cons to it, maybe i should buy something else? but catharsis recommends it, so any advice would be cool :D

thanks everyone

To be honest the Profire seems to be the most popular budget interface on here. I've got one and can't really think of anything bad to say about it.

Lots of ins and outs, clean quiet pre's, decent di inputs, 2 independent headphone outs, can be used as a standalone pre/converter.

Ridiculous amount of features for the money. Buy one.

Best prosumer level interface available IMO. Zero qualms with it whatsoever, not lacking any features or anything either. Definitely the ultimate when it comes to a PTLE rig.

hey Adam,
could you do me (and everyone here) a huge favour please?

i want to see what the "real" latencies are like in the ProFire,
follow these steps:

-open Logic (eeek! i know :) )
-go to the preferences/audio pane
-set the buffer to 32 samples and note the latency that Logic reports
-set the buffer to 64 samples and note the latency reported
-repeat for all buffer setting (128, 512, etc...)
-list the buffers and their reported latencies here please

thanks man,

im interested to see how much lower the latency might be than, say, my M-Audio Firewire Solo, which has a bunch of extra buffers that add to the "real world" latency, as reported by Logic,

i will do the same for each of the buffer settings on my cheapo interface too :)

thanks

Uuugh yeah I will do it when I get home, at my parent's for X-Mas right now. Not stoked on opening Logic, hopefully I can manage to check at least one buffer setting before it crashes

lulz :)

i'm still baffled by you're shitty experience with Logic.

for me, its been probably the most stable out of any DAW (and on any OS) i've ever used.

anyway, all you need to do is go straight to the preferences panel, then you can close it and run for cover

im also in the market for a 8 channel firewire interface, i'm kind of tossing up between the profire and a presonus firestudio. given i can get the firestudio for about 300 dollars cheaper (AU) what do you guys think? i was told presonus have better preamps? perhaps not?

i was getting like 7.4 ms last time i remember or maybe it was faster :O

I don't think there'd be much of a difference in preamps between the two units to be honest (though personally I've not used the Presonus)

If you can get it 300 dollars cheaper I'd be tempted to get the Presonus. Though I've heard of much more people having problems with Firestudio's compared to Profire's (to be honest I don't think I've actually read of anyone having a problem with this unit)

Got a Profire a couple of days ago. Installed the driver and it worked straight away with Pro Tools. Can't say much about latency as I haven't tested that (specifically for latency). It has disconnected from the computer a couple of times but I think it's just due to me needing a bit of a PC upgrade. Used it to record multi-track drums - good stuff. No complaints. Oh and the unit's case is made of metal - very sexy.

That is all...

Is the profire 2626 the best unit to run PT? I don't have the money for HD.

I have to choose between staying on cubase and getting a API 512c or going Pro tools and getting a profire. :erk:

Just talk about what I hear about...
You need to think about how many tracks you need before (M powered vs LE PT):

M powered= 2626
LE= Digi 02/03

Both have ADAT connection, so you can run an ADI 8 and get all outboard gear you want;)
Say this because I alredy thinked switch to PT but I can't live with this stupid 18 I/O limit with what I want achieve before have enough money for a huge set with mytek converter.:erk:
Just my 2 euros cents

I`m using reamper (ProRMP) to record clean DI with monitoring through amp.
Plugging it to monitor output of my mic pre or using interface output (with hardware monitoring enabled), so I getting the same result when reamping :)
