Magic: The Gathering (aka the Dork thread)

I really like sealed drafts. Constructed often forces you to know most of the now over sixteen thousand cards in order to really kick ass at deck building; for drafting you just need to be able to recognize a good card when you see one and figure out which cards will work together from a much smaller, more manageable set. I like whatever you call it where both players open a couple boosters and build their own decks from that.

I recently got back in by buying a theme deck of the newest set... ever since I taught some of the friends at school how to play, I'm playing slow, casual games with them every now and then.

Never was a very competitive player, but I did use to go to FNMs every week. Nowadays I just don't have the time.

I've played on and off since Tempest. Haven't played seriously since sometime around Kamigawa. I guess I would be up for some Vintage or Legacy matches though. As long as you don't play boring combo decks (the kind that play "the same" in glodfishing as in matches like academy/long.dec/TPS/etc.), fuck that shit.

I used to love Magic... great game but I have neither the time nor money to invest in this now. I've got music to make.

I'm tired of hearing my room-mates talk about their vividly gay colored decks and how they can beat other assholes over the internet (workstation) on the first turn.

The game is only getting worse, sadly. The new rule changes that are about to be put into place are very disappointing. They are simplifying the game.

Yeah, talking about magic strategy to someone who doesn't care/know wtf you're talking about is unforgivable.

I've been wanting to get into Magic but I lack the drive to actually learn the strategies behind the game.
Read the links I posted...they're short.

Linky?

I agree, they seem to evolve the game in the wrong direction. It started with the new design in Mirrodin and than when they introduced planeswalkers I've pretty much stopped playing. :p

I like the new design, but planeswalkers are way overpowered.

New design started with 8th Edition, actually. I remember because I went out and bought a pack of 8th Ed and thought I'd gotten fakes.

There were some cards with this weird design in Lorwyn that make me want to vomit, it looks like some really gay sci-fi CCG.

The planeswalker concept doesn't bother me so much, but it seems absolutely unnecessary and pointless. Just make the characters legends and don't bother us with this new card type.
EDIT:
On the rule changes
1. Simultaneous mulligans...sure, why not? Just makes life a little simpler.
2. In-play = battlefield. Why not? I've always used cast in my head. Exile I don't like, though. Fuck that. Also, cards are no longer actually removed from the game...unnecessary functional changes are lame. Also, this nerfs the Wishes. "Beginning of the end step" is fine. It actually was a bit confusing before...
3. Nixing mana burn is lame.
4. Changing the token thing isn't a big deal but does kill a couple cool tricks.
5. Combat damage doesn't use the stack...WHAT THE FUCK. This is a huge fuck you to anyone who plays the game seriously, as combat damage using the stack is pretty much key to a lot of tricks and strategies that make the game fun. Fuck this. The way damage dealing works now is also really lame. Why was this necessary?
6. The change to deathtouch isn't a big deal, but it's still lame.
7. I think the change to lifelink is actually good.

The thing about magic is that the only thing that separates it from a million other lame-ass CCGs (aside from it originating as a card game rather than being spawned as a poorly-conceived marketing product) is the complexity of it's rules, which give it a highly strategic nature. Simplifying that is probably not good. Especially because I have a feeling noobs will still fuck this up.

Absolutely. This new shit severely nerfs any sacrifice abilities because you can no longer sacrifice creatures that are about to die. I don't buy that noobs were having problems with this because you have to know the rules to abuse them...

They probably want to invent some new cards that couldn't exist with the current rules so they changed them.
