What's unofficial about it? Or, rather, "unofficial" to whom? If you weren't getting paid to go somewhere during the day, that's unemployed!

Well, Kela who pays the unemployment money in Finland doesn't like "freelancer" status unless you have a company, and I didn't, so I didn't just get my official status as unemployed. I did do some FOH gigs, about 300 of them, during that time, so I wasn't officially unemployed. Most of it was legal, but some wasn't as it's such a hassle to do the paperwork shit.

Honestly, people say that it's rough being a recent college grad these days, but at least I can still justifiably live with my parents (and stay on their health insurance, thanks Brobama!) while making $11-$13/hr, depending on commission - I really feel for you guys in your late 20s and above, best of luck to you!

That's basically how most places work dude, if you don't have a client base then they're not interested. To be honest why would they be? The goal is to get money coming in after all...

Yeah this. Nobody is just doling out jobs to fresh out of college kids. Who cares what degrees you have, degree is just a piece of paper in this business, nobody wants paper they want experience. On top of that, the recording industry is extremely clicky, so sending resumes doesn't get you anywhere.

Most of the jobs I have encountered for game stuff required programing knowledge as well, so they are not taking a creative only person anyway (that's not valuable enough).

Best to try to get your foot in the door in radio or TV and hopefully work your way toward something you like.

My old bud went to school for film making and ended up getting a job producing the news for a local tv station eventually. It was very competitive to get that gig. He work two or three jobs in a constant rotation of like 3 or 4 hours on then 3 or 4 hours off. He did that for a couple years with no benefits making like 8 bucks an hour until he finally got salaried to produce the news.

TV is a hard gig to walk into to.

Trust me I know degrees mean shit, well especially in audio engineering, less in music...I just heard a mix today from a guy who did the same degree as me, and it's one of the worst thing I've ever heard...seriously.

I think the thing that pisses off the most is that there is a lot of studios with shit ton of great gear, and yet their productions sounds like arse. This is why I'm asking myself why would I want to work there when I could do my own thing...the positive thing is that I have a place when I can tape drums and crank amps.

And about the radio/tv thing, that's exactly what I'm trying to do, but it's hard too, most places ask years of experience, but how am I supposed to get experience when no one hire people with no experience...

Well, i have a job but it feels like I havent one. My boss owes me enough money for 3 months of bills (exactly how late my bills are), the studio client base SUCKS (my boss scares the shit out of the clients with some antics) and I constantly feel depressed 'bout that. It sucks. Btw, I am an AE. I have graduated last july as a science of computing bachelor, but after sending about 10 resumés to the worst possible job offers I could find, I wasn't called for a single interview. So I am stuck being an AE at this studio I work on, and the other 'big' studios are enemies to the one I work on, so nobody will even consider hiring me. It sucks, but at one time, everyone of us will be hired for a job - it just isn't possible to be living that way.

good luck finding something, dudes.

I'm kind of semi-employed I guess. I work as much as I can with my brother in construction and remodeling, but we live in a place with a small population, so there are only so many people who need things fixed. I was on unemployment for a while which supplemented my income, but that recently ran out. I'm pretty much barely making enough money to pay bills, and usually I get paid just in the nick of time before something is overdue. Until this week, I'm already behind on a few things and won't get paid again for a while :(

jobs in music dont seem to exist here. It fucking sucks cause I spent 4 years in college, I have 2 diplomas ( 1 in music and 1 in audio engineering), but there is like 100 people for 1 job

no offense dude, but YFU!!

no offense taken, I don't even know what yfu means :Spin:

thanks urban dictionary, but do you say I fucked up because I spent 4 years of my life in a no-future domain? You're partially right I'd say, my music diploma (3 years) was more useful, I really improved my music theory and arrangement skills, I learned to play jazz and how to improvise on jazz standards, and more importantly I really developed my ears. My year in audio augineering was more crappy, but at least it costed just 300$ for the whole yaer, I met great people and had the the chance to mic drums and other loud stuff in a good studio. I mean there is private schools who offer the samething but it costs 15 000 instead of 300, THAT is ridiculous, but for 300, I dont regret it at all.
