OK ok they are gay, they wear loin cloths, they say death to false metal blah blah. Let's get all that aside for a moment.

With some seriousness, how are they sooo popular? Do you ever see them on extensive tours? Have they ever headlined Wacken or any other major festival? They're not exactly musically that diverse, and the lyrics are pure cheese....

However, I saw clips of them on TV in Brazil -- it was a record signing at Tower Records -- and I swear on my life, the crowds outside looked like they were waiting to see The Beatles or something. Opeth might have fanboys, but not like this. Nothing even close.

Have you ever met a true Manowar fanboy in real life? I haven't, but these guys sell millions of records. What's the population of Greece?

hmmm you accidentaly wrote about Greece in a thread about Manowar, right? eheh
Have you ever met a true Manowar fanboy in real life?
I look myself in the mirror often.
Now Manowar do fuckin RULE, they are one of my very fav. bands. They do MANY extensive tours (just check one of their live albums), and they have played in MANY festivals bigger than Wacken (anyone remember the once great Dynamo?).
LYRICS: They are not "pure cheese" at all. Read some lyrics out of their first 4 (and BEST albums). Just read "Mountains" and call it cheese...you wouldnt dare .... Some of them are poetry (yes they are)
MUSIC: Now thats the big thing. Manowar are , above all others, superbe epic heavy metal music. "Into Glory Ride", "Hail To England", "Sign Of The Hammer" are M-A-S-T-E-R-P-I-E-C-E-S, with some classic metal hymns (!) like "Bridge Of Death", "Secret Of Steel" (my fav song ever).
VOICE: Eric Adams is THE SUPERBE SINGER, anyone doubts that, he never listened to Manowar.
POPULARITY: Most of all is the hype about their status. They signed an album using their blood, their "true-ness". This true-ness is not that ridicular. They were talking about "False metal" and they were meaning all the hair/glam bands of the 80s, so GO THEM. Also they are the only heavy metal band with million albums sold that is not embarrased to say "we play heavy metal", while others think of it as a disease.
More to come ..

Iron Maiden will still tell you that they play heavy metal.

Anyhoo. The people who listen to Manowar are people with mediocre 9-5 lives who want to dream themselves away and think they're warriors in a world of glory and steel and/or anxious 14-year old boys who like Lord of the Rings and roleplaying who have a bit of difficulty talking to girls and stuff and seek their strength in Manowar, with all their confidence and talk of UNITY AND BROTHERS OF METAL WILL ALWAYS STAND! Yeah. As I see it, the sole reason that Manowar has gotten so big is that it really caters to the millions of people who need something bigger and stronger to turn to for courage and hope. Kinda like christianity.

"Manowar means very much to me. Their music gives me the strength and courage I need to face every day. I am a very shy person and I don't like dealing with people. Anytime I have to confront someone with an issue, I fire myself up by listening to Manowar first. When I have something important I need to get done, I listen to Manowar and they inspire to do my very best. When I am angry Manowar give me the strength to overcome my enemies, and when I am happy Manowar give me reason to rejoice. While I love many metal bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath, only Manowar makes me feel powerful enough to fight the world."

Oh, and I'm not going to deny singing along to BRO-THERS OF ME-TAL! with other brothers of metal while drunk at Wacken, but as music for serious listening..? Nah.

And most of you know that Manowar is only about chicks, beers, true metal, brothers of metal, the passion of the metal etc etc, because you didnt listen to the best Manowar albums. Most people know Manowar only from others' comments .

Bah, even if the first (best) albums were different that's beside the point, because we're not discussing Manowar's music but their popularity, and they weren't as popular back then were they? Consider yourself well and truly pwnd

Can't say I believe you, but even IF that was the case people probably didn't like them for the SAME REASONS back then so it's still totally irrelevant. How about you get over the "I'm going to get way fucking off topic just so I can defend Manowar, oh Joey you're so dreamy please make me your pleasure slave" syndrome?

Hey genius, I posted the reasons above in the post that you felt was too retarded to answer, probably because it's closer to the truth than you'd like to admit. Those are definitely extra-musical reasons...

And now you know why people liked Manowar back then, and why they like them now , and you KNOW that they dont like them for the same reasons.
What did i eat for lunch?

See, you said this yourself... you yourself don't deny that the first couple of albums were a bit different thematically and musically and still you think that people like the band for the same reasons nowadays? I find that hard to believe.

What did i eat for lunch?
My guess is poop

Yes you know better, and your opinions about Manowar are true-er than mine.
The "Reason" that you posted was just a boy's thoughts, not the thoughts of THOUSANDS. GEEEEEET OVER IT. 20000 people go to a Manowar concert, do they think the same about their music? Do they all say the thing that you wrote in your first post ? Why a bands popularity must be scientifically explained?

I've heard some 80's Manowar... and it really sounds not all that dissimilar from 80's Kiss... only with more abrasive vocals and lyrics about Metal, Wind, Swords, Fighting the World and Homoerotic Baby Oil Application Sessions.

Hellooooooooo in 1995 people didnt go to Iron Maiden shows to listen to X Factor songs, but to listen to the old shit. Manowar fans may like every Manowar album, and they like MORE their old ones, is it that hard to understand this simple thing?

"So tall, silent against the sky
Up through the clouds, where eagles fly
Wind and rain beat down on one so strong
They cut but never change, what stood so long

Tall as a mountain, I'm gonna tear through the sky
Life's for the taking
Like a man is a mountainside
Greatness waits for those who try
None can teach you, it's all inside
Just climb"

Wow man, deep... Wordsworth, move over!
