Marshall 1960A opinions?

All cabs are fully capable of giving you a decent recorded tone - period. No fucking discussion. If you can't get a good sound out of it, then it is YOU.

But for live usage, where you need to fill a room... that's a different story.

We used a 1960B with a Laney VH100R on the TNBD album; it fucking slays.

I agree for the most part, unless it's some cheap "beginner halfstack" cab. Even then, I've gotten shockingly decent results from a Line 6 Spider III half stack. It's just lame to see all these dudes limiting themselves to V30's because everyone says they're the best.

Mike, just hold out for a Rectifier Standard (oversized), as has been said they go for ~$500 on CL all damn day!

Really? Man it must be better where you're at because I can't find shit for Mesas in this area.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I actually found a different cab and seller (JCM 900 Lead Series, the straight version) and this deal looks more promising and I have already heard back from the guy so I may have that one by tomorrow. From what I've read on a marshall forum the straight cabs are more low-resonant and less edgy sounding and for me that's a plus.

I got my 1960b for $250 with nothing wrong but a 1" square tear at the very bottom of the tolex- which had been glued.

Just keep an eye out man, you'll find a good deal. That being said- I have an easier time with my Mesa- G12s seem phasey to me and were a little more difficult to get a tone I liked- but it's good to have versatility, clearly.

ok I was wrong ... that was lolzgreg ....LOL Thought it was you.

lol, nice of you to pop back and post it J. Well I love marshall cabs and v30's sometimes more than the mesa cabs actually, found them to have a tighter bottom end. Work beautifully for 5150 sounds. Never really liked Marshall amps with v30s though. Thats mainly because I tend to go for the marshall tones just on the verge of break up (punky twangy tones) rather than attempt to use them for the brootz, and the v30 mids are a bit overbearing for that imo.

Hey thanks for the comparison! I actually thought they all sounded like keepers but the bottom two were better imo.

Thanks for all the help guys, and sorry to disappoint you Marcus:lol:, but I got the 1960B! :D I had the guy open it up to make sure there were g12t-75's in it, and did a chug test and a clean test on it, all speakers were sparkly fresh. A slight wear on the tolex (mostly on the corners) and the obligatory dust but otherwise a sweet cab and I'm very happy with the purchase. Pics:
