Cab/speaker comparison: Mesa OS w/ v30/75s, Marshall 1960a

For this particular tone (very middy, perhaps because of the mic as well as the preamp), I'd say Mesa T75>MesaV30>Marshall T75 (all center, naturally); all sound great and are totally usable, but I find I prefer the bite of the Mesa T75 over the Mesa V30, and the Marshall T75 is too nasally for me.

Not trying to be a dick but that tone is quite atrocious on all of them. The mids are up WAY too high on all of this, there is no bite and no real crunch.

Out of all of them Marshall Center was the clear winner for THIS tone. It cause of the less woffy low end and the more scooped nature of the t75 + marshall combination.

Can you send me the DI's and I will do a proper comparison with an "unmodified" 57 and something less "mad"rangey tonally .....

Cabs and heads available for testing are:

Mesa OS Recto with V30s
Mid 80s JCM 800 with t75's
71' Solid Birch Marshall with V30s
Krank Rev Series cab with Patriots

Heads:
5150 with Ei Pre Tubes and JJ Output Tubes
5150 with Ruby Pre Tubes and Sovtek WXT+ Output Tubes
5150 with EH Pre Tubes and Sovtek WXT Output Tubes
Krank Krankenstein with Ruby Pres and Sovtek 5881 WXT+ Output Tubes
Jet City 20H with Ei Preamp Tubes and "Chinese" EL84 Output Tubes

I did this comparison for myself and decided to share it.

I don't really care what you can do, I could pull out the 5150 and an unmodified 57 if I wanted to. Thanks for the offer

I'm pretty much 100% with you on this.

Time for some wankery to hear comparison on lead work

Don't have to be a dick.... The dude is just saying that he could do a better tone if he wanted to. Seem's like he just threw this together as a quick test to hear what difference there was in his cabs and speakers. And wanted to share :)

Yeah, you kinda were the dickish instigator here Jay

I don't mean any disrespect to him, a bit uncalled for though.

Oh em gee, es not sc00ped 5150 t0anz wif teh stock M3sa and 57

Also, I'm not getting how people can't hear the guitars in the comparisons. For me, through both my headphones and laptop speakers the guitar is very prominent, and the differences are very apparent.
Maybe these discontinued Audio Technicas are more detailed than I thought?

Well said.

I'm always battling the keys. I enjoy them loud.

Well then if that's the caSe I apologize.....

The whole "I Dont Care" thing came off as a fuck you dude, and I responded as such. As for the tone and being "ohhh emmmm geeee notz skoopd fiddy was fiddy" Mr. Shindoku, you have to admit there are good and bad mid heavy tones. The tone in the OP is just way over the top with the mids.

My point in all of this was that if you really want to see what these cabs sound like you have to put them in the proper situation. Put them in the type of mix you are going for, put them in the type of song you are using them on. You have to get nitpicky when really doing fair comparisons. You cant have the mic in the same place on every speaker, you cant be in a different spot in the room....there are just so many factors.

I use both of these speakers for different things, and I quite like them blended on more hard rock stuff.

Oh, I know it's over-the-top. But you may not be aware, I love over-the-top mids lol! I'm personally sick of the same-settings-same-sound 5150/Mesa/V30/SM57 tone. There are great ones out there and I do enjoy them in the bands I hear them in, but I enjoy the really midrangey, Marshally tones of power metal bands :p
It may be a bad tone, but it's refreshing to my ears. Mind you, I gotta listen to the examples again, I was just listening for a favored tonality in the speakers.

EDIT: Listening again, I find the tone to fit the setting, certainly. If the bass wasn't as mid-heavy and the guitar tracks were a couple dB further back it would sit even better, IMO. But the guitars do have that sorta "over a telephone" midrange in them, especially in the V30 clips. I'd lower the mids a tad bit and introduce some more lows into the tone if I were using it in a proper recording.
Sorry if I sounded like a dick, it's very easy for me to come off as such due to my personality. If I ever make posts like that, it is merely in jest, no offense meant :D

Family once again

But this pre amp is a one trick pony, lowering the mids won't do anything. Literally. EQ is before the gain stages. Fender style.

I would typically take out that 600-1000 region with an eq after the pre but this is straight for comparison reasons.

If I recall correctly, GuitarGuru777 shot fat chick porno for a living before doing recording (Maybe still does).

So what you said to him is like if you showed me your nasty fat chick porn and were like "Yo Let me show you the comparison between girl A and girl B" and I'd be like "whoaa dude those whale women have like mega cottage cheese ass and more rolls than the Pillsbury dough boy, Could I re-shoot your porno with actual hot women?"

Whatever floats your boat floats your boat.

...unless your boat is full of fat chicks, then it would sink.

I'm dying over here!

You know what... fuck it... I've wanted to say this for a while... but anyone who fucks up recording a snare on a regular basis has no motherfucking business trying to school anyone else. This forum used to be a place of learning, but increasingly it seems like people want to throw around their cocks and try to prove how fucking big hot shot engineer producer types they are. Cunt off.
