so i heard meshuggah was supposed to be a good band... i bought their latest cd, and i dont know if its just me but i wasnt impressed at all with their music. in fact i was kkinda regreting i spend 20 dollars on it. i guess they were actually selling that hologram card included in the cd....
:notworthy OPETH

well if I were you I would have gotten some of their older stuff, cause I did like the new cd catch 33, but not as much as like, destroy erase improve. Or even you should download one or two of their older songs and see what you think of them

I don't mind simple and repetitive music but meshuggah is just annoying.

.. also don't buy something without hearing it first based on what other people say because other people generally know nothing.

yeah, really my freind and i were trying to get into other bands other opeth, we have a hard time finding bands that we like, i mean you know opeth is the best and its hard to compared to them.any suggestions to other bands will be cool. i also like dream theater adn necrophgist. and ill check out some older meshuggah stuff. thanks

well its difficult if you just compare with opeth.............thou dream theater and necrophagist are way too different,it depends more on the metal genre: death,prog......
Basically in opeth you get the best of it all!!!

Uh, there's a Non-Opeth Music chat area here.... But I wouldn't call Meshuggah "simple". Perhaps "repetitive"... I aprreciate what they do, but I'm not really a fan.

get "Chaosphere", it's the best. and then listen to it 10 times in a row ;)

when I listened to it the first time I thought "wtf, this is just unlistenable chaos" (btw, Chaosphere is like 5 times faster than Catch 33 or Nothing). I needed many many listens to get into it, and it got more and more interesting and, indeed, catchy. sure it's repetitive, but not because they're lacking ideas. accept that this is an important part of their style or don't listen to it, I'd say.

Simple stuff in odd time. I think Destroy Erase Improve is my favorite from them. I may listen to Chaosphere now and then but overall it isn't very compelling. I get my odd timing fixes from Spastic Ink, Watchtower, Jazz, Necrophagist, Frank Zappa, and Spawn of Possession mostly.

Destroy Erase Improve is their only decent album.
This band represents all that is wrong with Xtreeem metal and nothing that is right.
I'd rank them up there with tool.

That wasn't their new album, it was a new re-release of what tends to be the fan-least-favorite, "Nothing." Watch the live tracks on the dvd of "Future breed machine" and "In Death - Is Death," but if you don't like those you're beyond help (they're from different albums). Imo the best starting album for them is "I," partly cause it is my favorite song by them partly cause it's an ep so if you hate it you're only out like 8 bucks.

Chaosphere is my favorite album by them, I is my favorite song. Chaosphere was the first I heard and the first I got into, but it took over a year - I just didn't understand how mind-boggling it was at first and over time I started realizing I really enjoyed the second half, then later I noticed just what was going on and was like "wow i'm stupid" and now they're easily one of my favorite bands.

Btw, chaosphere is about 1.5 times faster than nothing, if that. They just play more notes at these slightly faster tempos. "Nothing" is actually more complex rhythmically, it just has lots of grindy riffs and thus sounds slower and simpler than it is.

I'm completely ok with the number of people who think Meshuggah is trash. For me, i think they are one of the most interesting bands in metal, and Catch 33 is brilliant. Catch 33 to me is hardly even a metal album. I mean, it SOUNDS like metal, but there's not much about the composition of it that resembles metal at all. Closer to post industrial or surrealist drone works.

Catch 33 bored the hell out of me, and I really tried to give it a fair chance. That said, i like a lot of riffs in other bands that are "inspired" by meshuggah, so I'll check out chaosphere and see if its any different than Catch 33.
