I was having a look at the forum .. I felt kinda insteresting about the post "which band should retire" .. I gound out many people who does think METALLICA should stop or even that they should have stopped like 12 years ago ....
Hmmm .. I never thought i would write about it .. But I do really need to share this with you all ...;)
I think METALLICA is still a good band. I might not like their new stuff. From my point of view the end of the good albums was "the black one", though i must admit the mix with classical music on "S&M" drives me crazy !!!!!:D
But I still do think, they are a good band and that they have just grown up with music. They are not twenty years old no more, and they have become more mature, and that doesn't mean they are doing sh*t now.... They have just changed ...And we should respect that and respect them as a good band, like they have always been.
They are not into trash anymore, and none is force to like them just because they were one of the MASTERS on the trash scene (of the puppets too .. hehehehe
:D ) But I think we shouldn't talk that way about them either.
They have just changed. They have become more mature. Who doesn't?... I do. I'm 26, and i don't think or even wear the way I used to. Though i still like metal music. Should I retire too just because i don't wear all black anymore or because i don't wear band's t-shirts anymore ?? .. nah .. it's much more than that ..
It's music. Every musician needs a respect for what they have done. And METALLICA have already shown us they are great musicians.. Have anyone forget the masterpiece "ONE"? .. I don't think so ..
I bet most of the people that talk about METALLICA like that still listens on private to their old albums ... maybe some of the new stuff too...
Am I right ?? ....They can still rock hard .. it's just your choice if you like it or not.
Thanky !!!:headbang:

good stuff man. I love Metallica and always will ....and i'll never deny it ... i was listening to LOAD yesterday for fucks sake.....i like it. Same with Megadeth ...... but let's face it here man.... it has become a big trend to talk shit about Metallica. ....i know it, you know it and the shit talkers know it as well.

For me Metallica were the greatest, are the greatast and will always be the greatest BUT I don´t really like the Loads and stuff like "we do what we whant" and "If you don´t like it there´s the door" are bullshit. I mean, a Band is there for the Fans and not the Fans for the Band, you know what i mean. For such extreme experiments there are sideprojects. I hope they´re listening what their fans are saying and what they want

Iron maiden are older, now listen to "Brave New World";)

Buddy .....a band is not there for anyone but themselves.... Personally if i have a band later on and feel like switching from say ...doom metal to thrash or death, i'll do it no matter how many fans i have because it's my music and if they like or dislike it it's up to them :)

I think a band is there for the fans also.

If they want to do something different to satisfy themselves, there are side projects or change the name for the new project. Without fans, bands would be working at McDonald's now because their attempt at a music career didn't get them anywhere.

Have anyone heard the new solo stuff by JOey Tempest, former singer on EUROPE ?. it has nothing to do with the EUROPE stuff. Absolutely nothing. It did shock me lots. But still I think he has to do what he really feels. I don't think a band have to do something for fans. They have to do what they feel inside. Once they don't follow this rule, they become comercial and non musicians, my opinion.
If METALLICA would have kept doing the stuff we all like, they would be liying to us, and just trying to be on the top and get more money. It would have been a shame.
A musician must do and offer what they feel inside. And I have said before, you might like it or not. It's our own choice.
:headbang:

(any doubts ... I'm a woman .. :D Someone called me a man .. hehehehe )

I think that's fine about the singer of Europe because he isn't releasing it under the name Europe. It's a solo project.

If a band wants to play something their fans don't like, they shouldn't release it under their name. It gives the band a bad name which upsets the fans.

?

This makes no sense, the stuff they are doing now is way more commercial than their older stuff. You don't think they are doing the new stuff for the money then?

But I agree they are free to do what ever they like.
But likewise I am free to call it shit and say they sold-out if I like. :D

MindMorgue.

There is no complaining/debating about the importance of Metallica to the world of the old metal. They were pioneers. The fact that they are still being discussed, is enough to imply there importance.

By the 90's they changed their musical style which is fine, it's the way they went around doing it. When it was cool for all these media dicks, to put down metal, Metallica made a point to isolate it's fans, whether you believe they did or not it doesn't matter, 'cause to me at that time that is what I felt. This the way I felt back then (when I was an impressional teen) that hell if they don't care about me why the hell should I care about them. So as far as I'm concerned that is when Metallica died/retired to me.

I do believe that bands should change from album to album. I wouldn't want to buy the same album time after time. But while changing a band shouldn't isolate their fans. I probably would still follow Metallica, if they had not isolated me. Example, I still follow Megadeth even though they've changed in musical style at the same time. Why I follow them, cause I understand that band's grow up and evolve as time goes on; I never felt Megadeth isolated me.

What I mean by "isolating" may or may not be true, cause it may not represent facts, but "isolating" to me is how I felt at that period in my life.

I hope I've cleared my views on Metallica!!!
Cheers Ladies and Gents!!!

All good points there Weapon X :)

Nothing is wrong with evolving as long as it remains true to what the band is about, and why the fans like the band. No matter what people say, bands DO have to answer to the fans to an extent. To me, the Black album was evolution. They wanted to make some catchier songs, Kirk wanted to use wah in his solos, they wanted to try a few new things, but the album was still true to the Metallica vibe. Load and Reload on the other hand, were a result of the music industry at the time seeing "metal" as the dirty word of the industry, something dead and gone of the past. So they tried to do albums that would appeal to the current rock crowd instead of their true fans, and as Weapon X said, isolated their fans in doing that.

i agree a lot with you trooper.
a band has every right to evolve, to experiment with new stuff, but within reason and set borders.

a band should always remember why they have got fans. because fans liked their first songs, their first album(s).

ACDC are a good example for that. you can listen stiff upper lip directly after jailbreak 74 and you wont notice and musical differences. only that production, quality and personal playing abilites have improved. and a new singer of course.

now some people say that's boring as ACDC are doing since 28 years the same music. but still - were ever they go (and they visit tons of places all over the world for a tour), they fill easily crowds of 20.000, in some places 100.000 people. now show me one single band that (still) gets so many people to their gigs.

maybe queen, if freddy would resurrect.

You all make good points and in your own ways are correct. Before the napster thing I had a lot of respect for Metallica for what they have done. I detest the newer stuff but I still held high respect for them. But now... well the whole music sharing crap with them really soured that respect. I can understand them wanting to protect thier music but isnt it a compliment when your fans are playing your music on thier radio stations in the bands honor?(dont they have enough $$) Because of the napster shit most public internet radio stations(live365, shoutcast) will probably die due to having to pay royalities. I've strayed off my topic a bit but to say the least I have lost to much respect for them. I doubt the loss respect of one mere metal head will not effect anything.

One-Two-Three-Four Forever :D

@satanistica
Metallica did thos "Mandatory I" And "Mandatory II" Sampler for the Radio stations, so I don´t thinke there is a problem, and it worked befor napster too.
And theis Napster Thing, I think Metallica gave a shit on napster untill "I Disappear" appears a long time befor the Release date on Napster and so i could understand it. And all this shit cmes from lars and the Management, James haven´t much to do with that, but he is the Face of Metallica so he is automaticly the greedy fucker.
