Hey all.

I recently saw Porcupine Tree twice in chicago on may 17 and june 1. I got to meet Steve both times, and the first time, i overheard someone asking him about the project, and he said that he and mikael have been writing for the past 2 years, and they're planning on recording sometime within the next year...

to those who are as excited about this project as i am: IT'S HAPPENING!

Im glad to hear the incoherant mumblings on the new Dream Theater track arnt what they were all refering to. I think itll be very interesting to see what they can come up with considering they all come from very different styles of progressive metal. Itll probably be a hybrid of all three styles. Imagine "Blackest Eyes" by porcupine tree with Mike screaming the lyrics -"swim with me into your blackest eyes" with some crazy double bass in the background and Steve doing the harmonys and claping his hands or playing the tamborine, haha. Mike Pornoy will ruin the song and have a 15 minute technical drum part in the middle for no apparent reason, j/k. No but seriously I think this will be pretty good. We'll see.

why'd they pick such an overrated drummer....sheesh

portnoy's got no finesse.... He needs to take an example from Gavin Harrison (who, i believe, would be perfect on this project) about being subtle and not overplaying. Works fine with Dream Theater, but i'm worried he's going to make this CD a bit too ...for lack of a better word, bombastic.

I think Mike Portnoy's important contributions will be more on the creative side rather than his drum playing. This project sounds pretty cool, as I enjoy all three members' respective bands.

He's actually good at playing in a restrained way when he does it. It's just that he plays fancy 95% of the time in DT. He gets off some really awesome patterns sometimes but they kind of get lost among all the annoyingly overplayed yet still uninteresting drum parts. So I mean, he's a good drummer, but his band isn't exactly a beacon of quality songwriting so you might never know it by listening to him.

I disagree. I think that Dream Theater is excellent at writing songs. If you listen to Scenes From a Memory or the song hollow years or some of their first few albums like Images and Words or Awake the songs on those albums are written extremely well. Their problem is that they have so much talent packed into each member( except James Labrie of course) that they often times over do the showboating and go off on a tangent that is fun to listen to for the awe factor, but unbenificial to the song itself. Mike Portnoy is a very diverse drummer and isnt stuck with just playing crazy technical parts. Hes a professional musician and is capable of melding his drumming into any style of music. The main question is what style of music they decide to play.

P.S. - When I think of progressive rock I think of bands like Riverside, Genesis, Marillion, Yes, Porcupine Tree, Camel, Kansas, Pink Floyd etc ... Opeth has alot of progressive rock sounding moments but their very much a metal band.
