Mikael's Jazz Influence

The music doesn't have to be jazzy. Jazz influences on contemporary music are somtimes subtle. It could be demonstrated in a simple chord progression, or through an odd time signiture. Let's not forget about the voicings in those chords. Seventh chords, Diminished chords, Drop 3 and slash chords? All jazz influenced. I've heard all of these elements used in Opeth songs.

Mike is a true artist, there's theory in what he writes. So one could conclude he enjoys Jazz. Maybe enjoy is not the right word, but I hope you see where i'm coming from. And if you listen to something for any length of time, it's hard to *not* be influenced by it. Personally, I hear lots of Jazz in Opeth's music, which is what I think sets it apart.

those who try to joke about this thread and fail miserably...well stfu
no need to get all jazzed up
lol @ me for welcoming russiaonice and then bagging him out for liking Tool. I should stop with the Tool bagging out seriously, i mean they are a band with much potential
well, they're what, 4 albums in? 5? and been around for 15 years now? hard to say they haven't already reached whatever potential they had

6, and it's better to make 6 kickass albums then making 12 crappy ones. It's not about the quantity it's the quality that mathers.

And by the way stop acting like a jerk but you are a american so I guess thats quite hard for you.

I hope Mikael doesn't like jazz.... well, he is his own person, but jazz has to be the boringest style of music EVER! I like some jazz like Aphex Twin, but as far as the older stuff, it just sounds like a bunch of random notes. If I want to hear random notes I'd listen to Suffocation or other "technical" death metal!

*e-slap*

I don't even know what to say.

What, it's not like I'm lying! Actually LISTEN to a jazz CD and try not to get bored to death by the randomness... opps, I mean "geniusness" of the music. People try to tell me that it's so complex when most of it is in 4/4 timing! WOW! SO COMPLEX! I'd like to see Miles Davis or whoever else even try to play something on the technical level of Opeth or Mastadon. I guess we all have opinions though...

That's not an opinion. You have absolutely NO fucking idea what you're talking about. Mastodon and Opeth are no where NEAR the technical abilities of Miles Davis and the people he has played with, and fucking Mike himself will tell you that.

It's perfectly fine to say you don't like jazz, that's cool dude! But if you say that Opeth is more technical than Miles Davis, that's not an opinion - that's WRONG. Listen to Jaco Pastorius's solo album, anything Mahavishnu Orchestra or Weather Report have ever done, Alan Holdsworth, Lee Ritenour, Victor Wooten, Pat Methany...these are highly skilled musicians that are, technically, LIGHT YEARS beyond Mike and the boys in Opeth. Just.....know that. Because you sound like an idiot.

And Aphex Twin isn't jazz. not even close man.

oh...back when I took time to make intellegent responces :(
tbh, I had a chuckle at the thread title.

Jazz is a very organic style. The "blue" note is a more "pure" or "natural" harmonic than the whole step. People who dont' bury themselves in classical structure tend to have unintentional jizzy moments.

Is this a fake persona for someone else?

Face of Melinda-
suprised nobody has mentioned it yet. Jazz all over the joint on that track and Id say its Opeth's most diverse song and probably my favorite. FOM is a depressive track that has a moody jazz feel to it in the beginning, then proceeds into a killer riff at the end. Fuck I love that outro riff!
