More thoughts on NSBM

henrikmain claims that NSBM is "big in the underground metal scene". If this is true, why is Ayeka listening to bootleg rehearsals? Are you guys so interested in hearing someone sing lyrics (which are typically indecipherable) that contain NSBM themes, that you’re listening to “rehearsal bootlegs”?
There are plenty of bands - the larger ones - that release pro-CD. A lot of them are actually fairly popular on this forum. Enough bands and releases to keep the casual fan interested. Meanwhile, there's a horde of underground acts releasing the 'bootleg rehearsals' limited to 50, maybe 88 copies - if I can get them on the cheap, why the fuck not? You never know what gems you might find. Hell, I dug out my Eisenwinter tape yesterday after reviewing the Keltoi and was quite surprised at how much I liked it. Very disappointed that it was only 10 minutes long!

By the way, I’d be curious to learn how many units the more popular NSBM acts move.

So would I actually, now you mention it...

Aside from Graveland, who are some of the more popular ones?

Is there something significant about the number 88? Seems like a fairly random number.

I'm sure it's been answered before, but what exactly does NSBM stand for?

Nokturnal Mortum (who are absolutely stellar,) Astrofaes, Hate Forest, Temnozor', Veles... Some call Burzum NSBM. Personally I don't, but I acknowledge that Varg was probably single-handedly responsible for the whole movement.

8th number in the alphabet = H, thusly 88 = HH = Heil Hitler
Yeah, it's far-fetched, I know. In a similar vein, you might see 14 and 18 pop up. The 14 words are "we must secure the existence of our race and a future for white children," and 14/88 is a commonly used greeting among national socialists. 18 means Adolf Hitler and is sometimes used when it's not really appropriate to speak about that guy.

National Socialist Black Metal.

There's also Thor's Hammer, who have hilarious album covers.

For death metal, there's Arghoslent from the US that share some similar beliefs.

Interesting.

I kind of assumed it was something like that. What I don't get is (and this may be my own misperception), is that I always thought that at least a good number of white supremacists considered themselves Christian, and clearly Black Metal is not Christian. So, I'm guessing I'm making some incorrect assumptions here.

You make the (common) mistake of equating "national socialism" and "white supremacy." National socialism goes further than saying "the white race is superior," and many neo-Nazis (though Hitler himself didn't go this far) believe that the reemergence of a pure, "Aryan" Europe in culture and blood must also include the reemergence of heathen, pre-Christian nature religion, and this is generally the stance taken by NSBM bands. Idiots like the KKK (who claim to be Christian) have no such ideals, they're just out to bash my pals. They are generally, and rightfully, looked upon with spite by the more ideological NS followers.

Yes, guilty as charged.

If that's the case, then where does the hatred to certain minorities come from in NSBM music? Or am I mistaken about this as well?

Nah, National Socialism does indeed consider the "Aryan race" superior to others (and this, by the way, is a major point where I disagree with NS, which I otherwise feel has several valid points.) It's not so much that NS followers (and I'm speaking about the more intelligent, ideologically driven of the bunch here -- disregard drunken skinheads with bomber jackets shouting SIEG HEIL and beating up jews outside football arenas for now) hate other races, or minorities as you call them, but that they want them out of Europe and back to their homelands.

Piss on my fire why don't you, Erik? :p

All I can add is that Kristallnacht have a few fans amongst here also. Ad Hominem and Gontyna Kry are some of the bigger bands (imo) you can get pro-CD albums of as well (though I seem to be the only person who knows Ad Hominem - you fools! They're good, check 'em out!). Interestingly, something I was considering earlier was how Moonblood manage to straddle NSBM 'mainstream' and underground. Seems like everyone knows about them, but large numbers of releases in tiny amounts means it's damn hard to find someone with their material - especially material that isn't bootlegged. I'm getting hold of the rehearsal cassettes soon, huzzah. Anyone know where I can find #5?

Ooooooh, Dub Buk have been chucked around a few times as well. I believe they also have a few fans here. I'm yet to check them out, the Hate Forest connection doesn't really fill me with enthusiasm...

Oh shit, there's a Hate Forest connection!? I guess I do need to check those dudes out. There's a thread around here somewhere.

Sorry, it's a Nokturnal Mortum connection actually. I got them confused with Drudkh. Shit, there's so many out there I'm losing track of names already >_< I read up on Astrofaes while I was at it, sound interesting. Would the latest one be a good start?

Astrofaes: pick up "Heritage", "Ancestors' Shadows" and "Dying Emotions Domain" in pretty much that order. You _NEED_ to get Drudkh.

Dub Buk is a band that gets tossed around here occassionally, but I think that I'm the only one who listens to them regularly (other than neal). okay, I'm not going to lie. Idu Na Vy! is like epic melodic black metal (but GOOD epic melodic black metal) and despite the fact that I know next to zero ukrainian/russian, its clear that their lyrics are very confrontational, and from what I do know, its very anti-semitic.

Their other album I have is called "Rus Ponad Vse!" and is a departure from the epic-ness and more of an agressive black thrash (the kind of stuff Sorath would blow a load over) . Both albums are excellent and I recommend them both. I think THR stocks them so they shouldn't be too hard to get.

Heritage and Idu Na Vy! are my first picks for both bands. Fucking brilliant! I'll get onto 'em both someday :)

Red Stream just got just about every single Nokturnal Mortum release, including Twilightfall, Marble Moon and Taste of Victory if anyone cares.
