I think bass is a rather underrated instrument in metal and bands that incorporate it well benefit greatly from it. It's different depending on the context. I would say, for example, that roaming bass lines in softer/more atmospheric parts of songs really drive the music forward, as demonstrated by Moonsorrow and Teratism, and more melodic doom bands such as Daylight Dies and October Tide.

A problem with a lot of bass in metal is that our bassists use terrible excuses for instruments which "look metal". Like the BC Rich Warlock or the ESP F-104. I won't go far into my qualms with instruments such as these but their focus on aesthetics instead of tonal function make them sound either horrendous or dull, both of which are undesirable in a mix.
 
I don't think the tone matters if you can't hear it. Bass is nearly always buried and even if it wasn't it's usually just following along with the guitars. I honestly tend to like it like that, but sometimes it can serve a different purpose.
