Id put a green pickguard on that sucker, get a new neck with ebony fingerboard from warmoth and stick in some bare knuckles. Locking tuners would be nice too, and if you can change the bridge to something higher quality like a hipshot.

If its your standard basswood Ibanez I would probably go for a miracle man set.

Inb4 "tone gurus" say BKP's are to muddy to play metal and EMG 81 is the only option.

green pickguard yes, or maybe brown. not sure about the body colour yet, but it'll have to match that

i will definitely not get a new neck, this is kind of a low-budget thing. i will maybe replace the tuners though with locking gotohs or something. not sure what i'll do with the bridge

it is indeed a basswood body. never heard of bare knuckle pickups before, i'll check them out. thanks.

so i'm thinking i'm going to paint it a nice shade of green and add a pickguard. maybe put a single coil or two in there.

That's funny: I'm thinking the same for mine...except a bright lime green

actual pleasant, subtle shades of green are not common in guitar land or in spray paint land, it seems

maybe i'll make it brownish instead

I think Bare Knuckle pickups are pretty expensive.
Stick with Duncan or Dimarzio

Only around 30 more per pickup, I think their worth it.

yeh sure i'll try some tomorrow, as with these finishes the lighting totally fucks with how dark/light/shinny/metallic it looks

and i went to a rock concert this evening and have continued drinking and am not up to such a task

Maybe ask on metalguitarist.org, they seem to be familiar with them. I would probably go for the HDN in the bridge and one of their vintage pickups in the neck, depending on what your using it for.
