further adventures in guitar refinishing

today i borrowed a heat gun and bought a very brutal chisel. then i heat-stripped the body.

RULE ONE OF GUITARS: FUCK ALL BLACK IBANEZES.
U6c9y3y.jpg

things this taught me:
1) for some reason the finish sticks much harder to the sides and the carved-out parts. top and bottom was a no-brainer, just warm it up and peel it off
2) the nozzle of a heat gun gets pretty hot, don't touch it you simpleton

the aftermath: again with the severe disrespect for hardwood floors. here lies the remnants of a cheesy black polycarbonate ibanez finish. rip forever.

okay so now i need to sand. 60 grit, let's do this.

then 120 grit (not pictured). now here it is currently:

you can kinda see a few places where i fucked up, and i'll need to do the inside of the horns by hand. am confident all is fixable though.

also. why would you need special clothes to sand off a freakin guitar. thats bologna.

also i ordered most/all hardware and miscellanea. the plan as of now is:

* sperzel locking tuners, chrome
* graphtech TUSQ nut, white
* gotoh gtc-101 chrome hardtail bridge with steel saddles
* 2 x tesla opus-1 pickups w/chrome covers
* wooden control knobs, stained green and oiled

and fuck ordering a pickguard, i'm going to draw my own (i found a traced vector file of an rg pickguard online, and while not very accurate, it's good enough to use as a base) and laser-cut it (or route it, not sure yet) out of aircraft plywood about 1-2 mm thin. i might laser-engrave some custom graphics into the pickguard too, but not sure yet whether that's classy or cheesy. so:

* body stained green and finished with tung oil
* headstock, veneered (?) and stained green, finished with tung oil
* pickguard, truss cover, input cover and maybe back electronics cover: custom made out of real thin plywood then stained white and finished with tung oil

gonna be pretty cool!

:lol: Amazing.

I sold two fancy/expensive pedals last night with the plan to put money in the bank. That would have been the prudent thing to do, especially since I did not particularly care for said pedals, and someone else might get more joy from them.

Within about 2 hours I had purchased two pedals. Fun fact: I already own both of them, but apparently I decided that it was a perfect time to stock up on backups. Because I tour a lot and need to make sure my pedlolz never fail. :Smug:

today i bought a huge-ass sheet of some really thin plywood (2.4 mm) out of which i'm going to make the pickguard, truss cover, input cover and back cavity cover

it's made of some indonesian rainforest wood and highly unethical no doubt

i also got a lot of fine sandpaper and tung oil and various other bits and bobs i need, i'm pretty much 100% set, equipment- and material-wise, to finish this now

I'm going to start a pool to guess where the Darkthrone sticker will end up.

I already have my bet placed, let's see if I win my own little tournament.

got my new pupz

no, that's not it, that's a sheet of freakin laser printed paper

but everything fits and lines up, so that's good
