My first label release is out!

How do you go about getting the most out of your limited hardware ermz? Do you approximate alot of settings with plugs before running it through the hardware (I know they sound different, hence approximate) so as to get an idea of how you're going to use your comps? It's hard to commit when you can't hear the effects in a full mix with the hardware running on everything you plan to use it on, and you can only do so much on the way in.

Mix sounds fantastic as per usual.

hey amarshism. I'm not particularly sure what you mean. The only pieces of hardware I used here were the 1176 A on the lead scream vox, and the 1176 D on the clean vox. Both ran in real-time the whole way through, so I was always monitoring through the hardware. I don't print tracks, and then use the comps on others if that's what you mean. It got confusing enough just printing and phase aligning the 10 or so samples I was using every time! This was largely an ITB affair.

Thanks Ola!

Sounds really good, but a bit middy. Your Untruth mix was a tiny bit too scooped, this one is a bit too much the other way. Still sounds killer though.

Can you go into any details on how you treat your backing vox/any vox that aren't lead? You always make them seem really exciting, for lack of a better word. Is it pretty much the same chain as leads?

Nah, doing a full record like that would take ages. The cool thing about metal is that sometimes the ITB tools can be better. For instance I had the 1176 D on the snare at one point, but it was just making things tubby so I threw it back on vocals. It doesn't seem to work on metal bass as well as something like Stillwell's Rocket either. Sometimes the harmonic saturation and the altered frequency response doesn't lend itself to the sort of clarity that metal desires, especially with the 250hz bump mine seems to have. Works wonders on vocals though. You kinda have to pick and choose your battles there.

@Morgan: Good call on the 'middy' thing. I agree with you there. Though saying Untruth was a bit scooped and this a bit middy implies you have a reference for what is the 'right' balance to you. That 'right' balance differs from person to person, so it's not a thing that's possible to nail universally. For instance when Untruth was all done, to me that was too middy as well because my reference at the time was STD. All that aside, I did have a chat with Plec about the rhythms and potentially cutting mids but he seemed quite adamant that any cuts he made sacrificed the clarity of the performances, so the decision was made to keep it this way. Once again, you have to pick and choose your battles, and at times you sacrifice one thing to gain another. Different bands and different source material demand different approaches, so I'm always trying to be as flexible as I can. I'm glad you dig it regardless though. If I had more time on the clock I would have spent it trying out more things on the guitars.

Backing vocals this time around were actually rather close to the lead vox. It's mostly because they aren't really backing vox but more stereo lead vox, if you know what I mean. The main differences are that the backings don't have a C4, and Rvox. Instead they have the LA-2A. I grew fond of using that one on backings after watching the Waves CLA video. Go figure in real life they're mono units and you can't use them for that at all. One of those times when ITB flexibility actually gives us something good.

@other guys: Thanks a bunch!

If any of you dig the music, please add the band and show them your support. They're still relatively small fish here in Oz, and they deserve to get huge ASAP. There is a massive market for them out there, and it's only a matter of making those right connections. Thanks again to you all for listening.

Ohh I forgot to mention one thing. The solos on 'Peace' are all done with Mokafix Cream Tube into TSE X30 into Ryan's Pres 8 impulse! It's the only amp chain on the entire record that isn't 'real'.

The track sounds pretty awesome, Ermz. I would definitely say that the high mids are a little overbearing on the guitars compared to the vocal track. The hi hat is also VERY loud compared to the rest of the drums. Otherwise the mix is definitely one of the best you've done.
