went amp shopping today, hehe. here's a quick review.

- randall v2: 3 channel head, clean/SS distortion/tube distortion. the clean channel was pristine, albeit a bit sterile sounding. gave me a jazz chorus vibe. SS distortion was more like a crunch channel, not really usable imho. tube distortion was cool, very tight, good bottom and highs, plus a switchable 6 or 7 band eq which makes the amp pretty versatile. overall it still had that SS sterile vibe...
- marshall JVM 410....noise! very noisy on the gain channels, even more so than the 5150. similar gain levels available too. the first clean channel was only really clean at the lowest gain setting, consequently there are a lot of different crunch/highgain tones to be found here. good sounding reverb btw. overall a cool amp, but not quite my cup of tea.
- brunetti 059....great amp! the second channel has just about enough gain for metal rhythm. the string separation and clarity was superb. the clean channel was awesome. downsides are the strangely voiced low end and the lack of presence control on the el84 power section. i'd say it's an awesome hard rock amp, that can also do metal just fine, just not the heaviest of metal (which is what i'm playing...)
- engl steve morse. now we're talking. GREAT amp. too much to cover here, it's really cool. the only downside is a slightly loose/sluggish bottom end, otherwise it's perfect.
- engl fireball 100....similar to the steve morse, but tighter and more aggressive. in comparison to the 60w fireball the 2 gain controls and footswitchable (low) mid boost as well as the 100w power section are great additions to the 60w concept. it's raw, mean, very tight, and somewhat versatile (although not nearly as much as the steve morse, duh).

guess what i went home with....
btw, clips tomorrow!

obviously :) fireball 100 is my new weapon of choice.

nice thing about it is that it's pretty much the tonal opposite of my 5150, which is a great thing for studio use.
i'm eager to find out how it behaves under the mic!

fragle, have you tried the mr.hector?

no, they didn't have it in stock.

just tried to mic it up, and it seems to record much easier than my 5150, interestingly. i have a v30 loaded 212 cab, and together with the 5150 honk mids it's often almost too much in that area. the fireball can be more scooped so it actually seems to benefit from the v30s.
i'll try and upload some clips later today, if my nerve grating gf gives me enough time to do a proper testdrive....

alright, first clip:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1296348/dennis/Rose Of Sharyn Fireball Test.mp3

4 tracks of fireball, two with the mid boost off and slightly raised mids, and two with the mid boost on and scooped mids (80L/R).
HP @ 60hz, LP @ 12khz, otherwise completely unprocessed.
recorded through a framus 212 cab /w vintage 30 speakers, one sm 57 in the basic "sneap" position, RME pre.
honestly, i haven't spent much time on settings or mic position. the controls were pretty much all at noon aside from the mids, see above.

it's a loud fucker btw. i haven't had a chance to take it to band rehearsal yet, so i can't comment on high volume performance, but for these clips the master was around 1/10, lead volume 7/10, which is quite a bit louder than my 5150 with post gain on 1. the window next room was starting to rattle on the low chugs, amazing....the fireball 60 of my other guitarist is much quieter at these volume settings (which is a good thing, as i feel the 60w head gets lost quite easily in a full band live mix with 2 gtrs, especially when downtuned).
to me it sounds darker than the 60w head, with a more pronounced midrange and more headroom for downtuned stuff. superb cleans too. i'm eager to take it to band rehearsal!

well, back then when i had my blackmore i was playing thrash, and since then i've gotten into death quite heavily.
the thing that convinced me to check out some engl stuff again was the fact that i'm playing the 60w fireball for the shows with der weg einer freiheit (31. mai in hamburg, warst zufällig da? :D )...now, we're playing black metal tuned to Eb, and the FB suits that sound very well, but for downtuned death stuff the 60w just lacks headroom imho.

jeeeeeeeesus, that thing is LOUD.
did the band rehearsal today with the master at 1.5/10....the 60w FB of my other guitar player was halfway cranked.
FB 100 on 2/10 is about as loud as the 5150 on 3.5/10 i'd guess...

anyways, veeeeeeeeery tight and unforgiving amp. leads don't sing as much as with the 5150, rhythms are tight as fuck and well defined though. built in noise gate does the job. mid boost on is the band-away mode on that amp...i'm still not sure what i'll use. mid boost off and slightly louder the overall sound is more balanced, but mid boost on and it cuts through the mix like there's no tomorrow. pretty awesome.
