NERVE END - AXIS EP (free stream / download) (includes STEMS, DIs and MIDI)

Got a PM with a few questions. I'll post the answers here too:

1. i suppose drums are slate like another video you posted and i´d like to get info about what did you use for toms...they sound really big. i love them.

Yes, drums are slate. I used some preset kit as basis, but i've tweaked it a lot. I also used some Sturgis samples.

Snare: http://joeysturgis.com/zen/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=1

Toms: http://joeysturgis.com/zen/index.ph..._id=15&zenid=633099ab14a46b8840831c8e2dbc9576

Even though both toms and snare are 100% replaced, I'm still using the slate samples bleed on the room tracks. All tracks exept the snare are routed to the NRG room channel. The snare is routed to the SSD room channel, where I used some reverb, gate and gclip to shape the sound how I wanted. You'll get more detailed info on this when I make the video.

2. could you share your guitar settings like you made in another thread with bass?

I used setup pretty similar to what Eric posted in this thread: http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/andy-sneap/676371-free-mesa-os-4x12-v30-impulses-you-6.html (check the 5th post)

I tweaked the settings to my liking, but the plugins I used are pretty much the same. The guitar group channel on the other hand was processed differently.

Hm. What's a good way to thicken them up?

Probably just choose a different impulse and tweak the starting sound to be as balanced as possible. Then, hopefully you'll get a good, thick and punchy sound without having to use a huge amont of post-eq.

Just had some fun with the guitar and bass DIs. The amp was a Krank Rev jr, recorded directly with gods cab impulses.
Bass was a little bit trickier. Basically I used B.O.D., some eq and a lot of compression from UADs La-2a and 1176 for that.

The lead guitar, drums and vocals are the original stems.

@Ronixis Thanks for sharing the files even though some guy is already messing with them. I really like your EP!

Hey, really nice to hear the DI's reamped through a real amp! Good work!

Been listening more.

Ronixis, I love the synths and your voice too, I wish it was a little louder in the mix actually! Perhaps it's quiet because you aren't a fan of your own voice? - edit I just wasn't listening as loud as I should've been lol!

the whole EP is awesome :headbang:

Thanks! Yeah, I left the vocals just a tad quiet to encourage people to turn the music a bit louder than than normally. One other reason is that we feel that our music is mainly instrument driven. Most of the complex stuff is happening beneath the vocals, so we didn't want them to stand out too much. I feel that in some cases super loud vocals can kill the heaviness of the mix, and I think this is what happened to some extend on the newest Textures album.

Vocals might also sound a bit distant/cloudy because every lead is tripled. There's one loud track in the center and two quieter tracks on the edges. I'm not sure if I'll do the vocals like this in the future, but I think it gave them a unique sound.

Got a bunch of questions as PM, I'll post 'em here for everyone to see:

what's do you used for mastering this song? mastering chain and plugins?

I used Waves SSL compressor, iZotope Ozone and Voxengo Elephant. I'll probably show more detailed info on this subject when I'll do my mixing video.

Also I've been playing around with your stems and DIs and I've figured out that my 7 string's DIs sound dreadful, I was wondering what pickup you have in your 7 string? Thanks

We used bunch of different guitars and pickups.

Rhythm guitars: Schecter Jeff Loomis (EMG 707)
Solos on track #1 and #4: Carvin DC747 (Lundgren M7)
Solos on track #2 and #3: Ibanez JPM100P4 (Dimarzio Steve's Special)

Cleans and leads were done with all of the above depending on the situation.

Wow... just loadet the DI's, and my guitar sound I normaly use sounds soo f***ing awesome. *___* What kind of DI box did you use for this record ?

And wich samples for the cymbals ? Sturgis ones ?

Guitars are recorded straight through Mackie Onyx Satellites instrument input.

All cymbals are Steven Slate.

...I don't know if you're affiliated with http://www.redwirez.com/ but if you are, thanks for the impulses! We used one on the recording.

No I'm not. I didn't know about redwirez impulses before.
Kinda missleading... ^^'

Ahh thx. I will try the Master One cymbals on your track. :)

Which Redwire Impulse did you use? Did you blend it with any other impulse?

The IR's are the same, but I adjusted the volume ratio to my liking:

I'm bumbing the thread because of a new studio report we just released:
