Hey guys,

first off, since its my first post.. Hi to all, great forum!

Next.. I did a cover of Nevermore's "This Sacrament" to get started with recording and mixing - i'm quite new to all this and it's actually one of the very first efforts I did.

Keep in mind: Jeff Loomis is beast at guitar, so don't be too harsh on my sloppy playing :)

Let me know what you think, any advice is appreciated! Thanks a lot.

Pretty cool guitar tone, the bass is a bit trebbly or middy(can't quite put my finger on it) and is hogging space from the guitars though. You should try to get the bass grit a bit lower. Also there's some really strange shit going on with that snare, it's distracting as fuck, sounds like it's being hit twice every time.

You wouldn't mind sharing the DIs?

Thanks a lot, will work on it. Yeah, already assumed that i messed it up a bit with the delay on the snare... :Smug:

And.. Sorry, no DI's... i miced a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier (ENGL cab) and a AMPEG bass combo... So I'd like to share it, but guess it's not possible ;)

The playing is pretty good, the guitar tone too. I'll agree about the snare sounding like double hits. Btw, you're not supposed to put delay on the snare, just reverb will do fine.

Thanks! Not the easiest tune tho :)

Im gonna upload a new version and try to fix the points mentioned above. Any further opinions?

Actually the bass sounds a lot like the original recording to me, maybe even back off the low-end on the guitars a bit. That should let the guitars breathe better. Edit- and it's missing just a touch of overdrive on the bass.

Okay, here's the new one... Hope i'm headed in the right direction... To me the lead guitars sound strange now, try to fix that tomorrow...

EDIT: I automated the volume on the bass track on this one... Drops after the intro (it sounds like they did this as well in the original). Dunno if it's maybe too much, maybe the whole track drops a bit too much after the intro?!

Way better man! The leads are just a little loud really. I think that's about it. great playing BTW. :headbang:

Damned! Ok, so one step back.. Already noticed, that something wrong is going on there, just didnt know what exactly it is. Well.. Still gotta lot to learn... So I hope I'm back on the track with this one...

Thanks a lot for the feedback, really helpful for a beginner :)

EDIT: Ok, gonna change the bass a bit again...

Yeah. That rocks! Just don't automate the bass down after the intro is all.

EDIT: I just checked it against the album... The only noticeable different is the little bit of Overdrive on Sheppard's bass tone. That's it.

Sounds good dude, i dig them guitars :D and the playing is good man, no point lying and saying its sloppy, you even got the solo perfect haha.

The bass wasn't twangy enough for me, the original has a incredibly twangy bass tone, i actually prefer your bass tone, its got more actual bass to it, sounds good.

Thanks for all your answers! Okay, I slightly changed the bass again: removed the automation, changed the compression a bit and brought the overdriven channel up a tad.

Bass chain is: Jackson Bass Chris Beattie Signature (EMG Pickups) -> AMPEG combo -> Unidyne 545 (off axis) -> Interface

On the editing side I did it quite the way Ole explained in his video ("Recording Metal Bass Guitar" on youtube, or whatever it's called :) ) - clean channel with a mid-cut and high-cut, overdriven channel very middy. i used the vintage overdrive plugin from bte audio on the overdriven channel and added some multiband compression on both channels as well as on the bus.

Here we go, the new version, i hope the bass is still fine... Would love to have some vocals on it, to get some practice on a complete mix - so if anybody feels like he's the man for this, feel free to keep it a go (maybe even another styled vocalist could fit this song imo) :)

Hell yeah, finally! :D Thanks dude! You helped me a lot getting it done! Very motivating to go on with this recording and mixing stuff! Cheers
