New BTBAM album?

the way the guitars and the kick fit together on evangelion is perfect, i do really quite like the guitar sound. the drums could be whole lot more vibe-y though. i see what ermz means about it sounding like the blackening haha.

also, color's mix is insultingly bad. i swear its the same studio that did alaska too, maybe im mistaken.
alaska is one of my favourite sounding albums ever though, im not sure much could have lived up to its glorious mix

it might just be my rip, but does the blackening have shitloads of clipping? like, more than acceptable amounts?

And tbf, I agree with Marcus. It comes off as pretty badly structured.
Good structure is having it flow PERFECTLY, to me. "Prog" music almost seems like the exact opposite philosophy. I love Alaska because it's basically a really fucking good, really fucking heavy metal album that happens to have a few prog moments on it to break up the monotony. Alaska seems more about good songwriting than pointless technicality (disregarding the end of Selkies, but they somehow get away with that,) which is why I love it. Colors is a musician's album. Written by musicians FOR musicians (and 15 year old metalcore fans who wish they were.) Alaska is a metal album written by songwriters for anyone and everyone. I know which of the two I find to be an absolute farce.

I hope there's some more fucking SONGS on this album, not more pointless technical noodling that feels like it goes on for hours.
Also @ marcus, decade of statues is one of the only songs off Colors I feel I can enjoy properly. It's probably BECAUSE of the deathcore riffing haha. It feels so unlike them and tongue in cheek and stupid.

they must know that part sounds like a total parody.

i had it downloaded, then got the regular CD, then the special edition CD+DVD after that, and each rip has had a lot of clipping.
having said that, i find it much easier than 90% of people on this forum do
the music's too good to stop me from enjoying it.
so im not the right guy to ask to be fair. I stop myself from hearing the clipping, just because.

When it comes to the loudness wars, I'll take too much clipping over too much compression any day. The Blackening > Planetary Duality soundwise ANY day.

I try not to listen to music that much with an audio engineers hat on, I find it just ruins it for me.

And yes, the production isnt that great on colours, but the songs are superior to alaska for me anyday. Less boring, I dont care if its gimmicky.

alaska? gimmicky? fuck that.
that album is fucking perfect, anyone who disagrees is, to quote the infamous yahtzee croshaw, pants on head retarded.

I was saying Colours is more gimmicky, thats why I like it.

Alaska is just dull, I like BTBAM when they break into full on country music, it entertains me :D

+1
After The Silent Circus, I didn't think they could get any better, but Alaska definitely took it up a notch, still one of my favorite albums. As far as the deathcore comparisons to suicide silence etc., I would say that BTBAM doesn't have parts that sound like Suicide Silence; Suicide Silence sounds like parts of BTBAM. I just hope the new album leans more towards Alaska, rather than Colors.

Yup, that's the exact part that makes me utterly wretch  And KKuff, who cares who was influenced by who, my point is it's unashamed deathcore :ill:

Yeah, I guess it still is, and if you don't like deathcore at all, then I could see why you wouldn't like them. I do like some deathcore, although I get sick of seeing so many of these bands that sound the same all coming out at the same time. I've been into BTBAM's old stuff before I'd ever heard of deathcore, so it still sounded new to me then, so I don't really associate them with all these new deathcore bands.

Yea it's definantly the same studio and engineer. They didn't like how Alaska came out at all, bc they said it got ruined in the mastering job. All in all I personally am a much bigger fan of their prog stuff bc I feel like they are way better at that than the metal stuff. That being said Dustie writes killer metal stuff for Glass Casket so maybe if he did some of that I would be more into it.

Ruined? The fuck? I hear very little, if any, clipping. Maybe I'm just deaf. I always thought Alaska sounded really nice in every way.

But seriously. There's a difference between having shit ruined at mastering, and having their next album made to sound like it's underwater to compensate for it.

Care to explain how Alaska's over-edgy mix is better that Colors?
I haven't heard an all-mic metal recording that good in years.
Edit: No, Alaska doesn't have much in the line of clipping. But unless you're low passing at 5k in iTunes, I cannot understand how you can possibly think it's well-mastered :p

What, so you dig muffled recordings? I feel sorry for you man.
If you're insinuating that Alaska is a harsh sounding recording, then you must have really fucking sensitive ears, because it's one hella balanced sounding mix IMO. Can hear everything from the nice subby lows to nice crisp highs ^_^
and anyway
i prefer an album had a bit too much high end, because then if i decide to be a heathen and put an itunes eq on an album, ill have a much easier time taking AWAY high end than adding it back in.

It's not muffled bro, check your rip, you probably got a dodgy one. I have the original copies of both and I can tell you right now, Colors is far better mixed and mastered. Zero clipping with the same loudness is only the start of it, Alaska sounds like it was recorded through a 002 (which it was) and Colors sounds like a HD. Even though it's only a 002 still =D

Colours is muffled. Its very cloudy sounding, and lacks the high end definition of Alaska, and no its definately not my rip.

I can't comment on Alaska, but my comments on Colors stand, and saying it's all-mic (meaning not sample-replaced I assume, and I'll take your word for it on this) as if to use that as an excuse doesn't hold much water, since I don't care if it's all sample-replaced or not as long as it sounds good, and this does not IMO! (pillowy, undefined kick, overly prominent bass that just muddies everything up, indistinct vox that often get buried) Swallow the Sun's "Hope" to me is a far better example of a natural-sounding production that's still super-clear (and maybe there was sample replacing on it, but I absolutely could not care less, cuz it still has a very natural vibe IMO, and also is wonderfully clear and to me perfectly fitting for the band!)

e.g. (apologies for atrocious youtube quality)

All I know is they said that the original mix Jamie did and the master sounded totally different and that they were quite unhappy with how it ended up sounding

I definitely agree that Colors sounds MUCH better than Alaska... I love the music on Alaska, but not a big fan of the mix/production at all...
