New Deftones

Yeah, definitely no Pro Tools going on:

;)

No, I just read that there was no Pro Tools in the recording process of the instruments. Just them in a room and recording to tape. I'm sure it was mixed down from tape and mixed in a DAW, unless they're completely crazy. Yeah, vox were probably done in digital domain.

I too am a Deftones nut-hugger

I agree about the guitar tone, it's fucking tits. I do think there's some samples at least on a couple songs. if you listen to a couple of the songs closely though you can hear the hi hat pump through the snare mic when it hits. other than that theres alot of transient designer happening.

Yeah, you can totally hear hi-hat pump. The drums sound pretty natural to me on the songs I've heard.

From wikipedia:

Earlier records such as 1995's Adrenaline and 1997's Around the Fur were recorded without the digital audio program Pro Tools. Instead, they were recorded as just a band "in the room with just our instruments, no other distractions" according to front-man Chino Moreno.[

Diamond Eyes was recorded in two months with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, Stone Sour, Alice In Chains ).[12] Deftones avoided using Pro Tools on the album in favor of writing songs together as a band and practicing them "a million times 'til they were perfect" in order to achieve a more raw and "personable" sound.[11]

I've been listening to this album for weeks now, it totally kicks ass :D

Its so much better than Saturday Night Wrist, or anything since White Pony.

Also, my favourite song from it is probably Prince

Yeah, like I said:

They might have recorded the instruments to tape, but I bet this was mixed in PT. Anyway, sounds cool!

I just thought it was funny to see a picture of Chino in front of a PT rig right next to the article that originally cited the "no Pro Tools" (sic).

It's also not too much of an abstract guess to speculate that the band wouldn't have an idea as to what exactly happened at the mixing stage. It definitely sounds to me as if there are samples involved.

I don't mean that negatively, it's a damn tasty mix! And I wish Nick R. would have done the mix on the latest AIC instead of over-the-top Staub. This is exactly the kinda vibe that would have fitted them better IMHO.

this cd is awesome - and i am far from being a deftones fan. The 11th track has a GREAT piccolo (at least it sounds like it) snare that's so cracky its yummy. Great drum sounds, great guitar tones, awesome cd.

Oh man, I couldn't agree more. Yeah, the latest AIC album has that wow factor when you turn it on, but it get very irritating after about 30 seconds. I can't imagine the Deftones with that type of mix.

I must say, I never was a deftones fan. In fact before this thread the only deftones song I was familiar with was house of flies. After listening to the song diamond eyes posted here I went ahead and listened to the whole album and I'm really impressed.

I thought Stephen was a Greenback fan, not the regular ol T75's...

He uses T75s in his live cabs, but all recordings have been done with Marshall 1960B cabs with Celestion 80 watt Classic Lead speakers. The tone on Diamond Eyes is such a departure from the other albums that it makes me think he used the 100 watt Celestions, which are like T75s with more bottom, no? I don't really know, the new tone just has that scooped and hollowed out T75 sound to me.
