New Deftones

I was streaming through this twice yesterday and I really like it. Given I didn't really like a whole lot by Deftones apart from the occasional song that really means something.

So I was gonna buy this tommorrow. The website of the shop I was planning on going to get it says it's 21 EUR. Yeah right, fuck that. I'll either find some place that has it cheaper or I'll have to rely on streams until they drop the prize.

Buy via amazon or somthing?

16 euro. Or else I tunes if you dont mind just having the mp3's..

Was there a reason that he didn't mix the whole album and just that one song?

probably were only willing to dish CLA cash for what they figured would be the biggest single off the album

Yeah, they definitely at least wanted the CLA factor for the single. They probably had Nick mix the rest since they likely trusted his ear/exposure to the record to make it turn out right, and I would guess that they just wanted to pocket some of the record advance money- totally reasonable and normal thing to do.

Aaron: I really think the "CLA factor" as you call it is simply some old-ass, scared, clueless A&R believing that anyone except for some engineers gives a shit about who mixed the track. And also covering his ass by being able to say "well, it wasn't a hit, but we did everything we could. we even had it mixed by CLA and he mixed many hits!" ...

Not saying CLA isn't good at what he does, but no-one outside of audio circles recognizes anything about a mix.

I'm amused that Steve Slate went to all the trouble of making a sampleset designed to sound like Abe Cunningham's drums on ATF, only for CLA to just use a different sample from the Slate collection on the single.

Anyway, I like it. Didn't expect to to be honest as the last few records have been kinda disappointing. Some of the tracks have kind of a Will Haven vibe going on, and although I'm not a fan of tuning lower and lower I have to admit that Chino's vocals actually fit pretty well in the low register of the guitars unlike some of the previous efforts.

you don't go to cla because it looks cool to people or because people will listen to it because he mixed it

you go to cla because of the sound, which is exactly why a lot of people do it for a single. the single has got to sound the best.

"Best" is a rather subjective term (see above where people can't decide which songs they like best soundwise) especially when you consider the fact that anything that gets played on the radio/tv sounds like complete shit anyway.

I am one of those people who don't get the hype about CLA, JJP, Maserati etc. because I really have never heard one of their mixes that I thought was better than "good" - or in the case of the last Nickelback CD, I thought the CLA mix was the worst mix on the whole album.

Of course I must be wrong, cause otherwise they wouldn't be in the business for so long, making the top-dollar ... ;)

Man, I don't know. Something about most of CLA's mixes make me go crazy because of how good they fucking sound.

To me, it's more of how CLA rides his automation and brings huge life to a track. Listen to the Blindside record he did...... the vocal sound will fucking BLOW you away and the sheer dynamcs brought forth by all the automation is astounding, to me.

Automation is an art unto itself.

Do you guys really think that's just a JMP-1 in the final mix?

I know that's what Steph likes to use, but I'd imagine that tracks were probably re-amped through all kinds of different head/cab combinations, and probably layered in the final mix.

It sounds too good to be just a JMP-1.

hunting for diamond eyes tone lately, i read that they only used jmp1 + mashall poweramp into t75 cabinet + neumann u47 (for presence and fatness) + sm 7 ( for balls and hair)

tried emulating that sound with axe fx jmp + redwirez (there is u47 impulses and sm 7) , but only got 70 % close....

dcb, post a click!!!

realy enjoying the new record. Diamond eyes (song) is so good.
The mix is blowing me away, everytime I play the CD.
Too bad CLA didnt mixed the full record...but the other songs sound different but also great.

just kidding. yeah cla did a fantastic job.

alright here is an early try of diamond eyes i havent really finished...

Axe FX SLATE DEFTONES COVER (COOL BUT NOWHERE CLOSE,HAHA)

let me say that i stopped working on this, i was satisfied with how it turned out but at the same time is only like 50 % where the original is...
its pretty good, but its obiously not the same sound... also i went to loud on the master.. AND i just did this after listenign to the song on youtube, so i basically did this by ear. thats why the riffs sound different.

for the record : i got wayyy lcoser to the guitar sound later,
clips coming later.

// about automation on cla's mix:

i love how cla works with automation on this one AND the mastering (bernie grundman) is fabulous !! if i delivered a master like this to my bands,
they would have killed me. but the deftones set a mark with not going overly loud and making use of dynamic climax again!
listen to the first riff... it sounds huge, but is quiet as fuck :)
then the first chorus comes in and BAM.
then the last riff !! BAMMMMMM

haha, i love how they take their time on this song.
rushing into the first chorus after 2 verselines, hehe.
what i tried was getting the "snap" into the snare.
also i tried achieving this fantastic guitar sound. didnt really work out, but
that was like 4 weeks ago when i didnt even know they used u47s...

// final thoughts : this is sooo different from all the metal around, and honestly : this is what i love about "metal" - mixes with dynamics... :worship:

and let me say : the whole record would have sounded better with the clas "snap" on all other tracks snaredrum !

at first I thought the same about the cla mix against the rest.
But after listening to the cd like 10 times I must say, the other mixes work perfectly with the songs.

This is also a factor which makes the deftones so special. No track sounds the same, that started with white poney...
minerva was a step-back. saturday night wrist was a bit to dirty but also great....

deftones is one of my alltime favourits!!!!!!
