New James Labrie track

I just listened to this earlier today too. Love it. His last album was so good, I'm expecting the new one to be on par.

You should add this to the song of the week thread too Glenn! Just sayin' :goggly:

As a long time LaBrie basher I'm going to say something I never imagined saying a decade ago: he's the most exciting member of Dream Theater now. Static Impulse completely smashed my face in with its awesome, and if this album is as strong as this track it will certainly carry that torch well. When he sticks to his strengths (mostly his mid-range) he's pretty damned awesome. I'm definitely in for a copy of this album when it drops.

Agreed on all counts. He's a really solid songwriter too. D

I guess I'm the odd man out. You're the singer....this is YOUR solo album, and yet the premier track off your new album features vocals dominant by someone else?

This isnt a complaint about the growl vocals its a puzzled choice to have a debut track from your new solo album where your vocals aren't even whats featured.

I was big into the first 2 solo albums but the last two ones have been kind of a letdown.

The song isn't bad at all, and neither was the last album - but this literally could have been a Soilwork song as well as damn near every song on the previous album. I know Witchers has been helping write for James too, so that explains it. Still it would be nice to hear something a bit more original and not riffs that could have easily come off of Stabbing The Drama or Figure Number Five or whatever. Even more of a shame is that Sfogli is one of the most tasteful players doing this, and he should really get more input at writing.

Its the greatest thing I've ever heard, but at least its better than Dramatic Turn of Events.
I'll probably be getting this, depending how the other tracks sound.

Fuckin awesome. Can't wait for the release.

It's probably not going to happen but i'd love it if he did a US tour supporting this. I thought his last solo album was more interesting than Dream Theater's and I have a feeling it'll be the same with each of their next releases.

Sure his vocals are featured. The screams and cleans are split in the verses but the chorus is all his.

I'm going to disagree with you because Train of Thought is their last good album. If you had said 4 albums, then yes.

I definitely don't agree with that. ToT was average. Black Clouds was great, but I wasn't a huge fan of Systematic Chaos or Octavarium.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I can't stand the approach that LaBrie is taking with his newer material. I've defended him as a singer for years, and I believe that his Mullmuzzler albums were seriously overlooked. On those albums, he managed to stay within the progressive metal genre while having a sound that didn't simply mirror that of Dream Theater. "Elements Of Persuasion" was a little more straightforward by comparison, but still absolutely awesome. "Static Impulse," was a major letdown for me, and this upcoming album is shaping up to be another disappointment. I've never been a fan of extreme vocals, but even if I were, I would have to agree with The Metal Madman and AeonicSlumber when it comes to this material. If you're a well-known singer from a well-known band and you release a solo album, shouldn't the focal point of the music not be someone else's voice? Aside from that, the songs really do bear more than a faint resemblance to those of Soilwork, and that's not what I want from LaBrie. I really only enjoyed half of "Static Impulse" (thankfully, James knew better than to let Peter Wildoer's voice taint every song), and I never thought I would say that about any album featuring the singer who made me want to be a singer.

Stay metal. Never rust.

...

How are the screams THE FOCAL POINT?!

On Static impulse, there are TWO, count em TWO songs on the 12 track album where the verses are screamed and James sings the chorus/bridge. Even in those tracks James is still very much the focal. There are 4 or 5 songs (at least) where he sings by himself and for the rest of the tracks the screams are in the background or only a couple lines. Doesn't sound like the focal point to me.

Now, if every song was scream the verse james sings the chorus then that would definitely be more of a focal point.

I'm going to go way out on a limb here, and call me CRAZY if you like, but maybe..... JUST MAYBE....... James wants to do something a little different? Maybe he personally ENJOYS this type of music? Maybe he's not doing these albums for sheer record sales, and to appease the DT fanclub?

Ack.

That's crazy talk.

What am I thinking? Thinking the artist should be allowed to choose their material.......

I actually liked Static Impulse quite well, mainly because it wasn't what I was expecting from James. I'm very picky when it comes to using growls, period. When it works, it works though. I feel like it does with this band.
