New James LaBrie tune

He couldn;t hit the high notes when I saw Progressive Nation 2 years ago....and kept going off stage to drink his herbal drinks to help his voice.

He wasn't even attempting some of the long drawn-out high notes when I saw them this summer, but he still sounded great. The guy is approaching 50; I'll forgive him if he doesn't have the full range he used to.

the problem comes in that James sounds like crap live.

James sounds like crap live only when he isn't trying. He can do a great job when he's actually trying.

As for the song, I liked it a lot. I have to look past the growling/screaming vocals but in my opinion James sounds great and the music sounds far better than most of what DT is putting out these days.

+1. Just like Ray Alder. He doesn't quite have what he used to either. But in both cases, their delivery is unquestionably good.

I've seen them twice and you are wrong.

Maybe that only means that you haven't experienced him enough live. James can be really awesome live, but he's not the most consistent live singer in the world. I've seen Dream Theater 16 times. I'd say there were at least 4 or 5 shows of those that he had a bad night. About 5 or so were ok, and the rest he was on.

Watch Dream Theater's Budokan DVD and tell me who's wrong.

I have the Budokan DVD and James sounds good...

All singers have bad nights...

And I'll echo the "nearing 50" sentiment...he's not gonna get out there and wail like he did on Images & Words some 20 years aftwewards...his delivery and overall ability is good.

I think James has actually been getting better the past several years. Right around 2003-2004 there was a noticeable (to my ears) uptake in his quality that hasn't abated yet.

The parts of the song James is singing is great but the parts of the song, (with Matt Guillory singing.. errrr I mean growling), could be any one of a hundred bands with cookie monster as their vocalist. If you want to hear some very good songs with James "singing" a lot of melody, then pick up a copy of WINTER ROSE circa 1989...

It's Peter Wildoer from DARKANE growling. Gotta tell ya I love it! Kick-ass fucking tune.

As far as I am concerned, my observations are that, left to his own creative devices and artistic abilities, LaBrie tends to shine far more and a vocalist AND lyricist in his own band and doing his own material. Much as I love Dream Theater, I definitely find far more to like about LaBrie melodically and vocally on his solo CDs and when he records with other, less strategically controlling musicians. I know it works (excellently!) for DT but it's painfully obvious to me that LaBrie has far more to offer than just the DT material. "Undecided" from his last solo CD, and "Message from the Mountain" are too examples - and greatly diverse ones - where LaBrie just brings the songs so much more when he's given that creative freedom and writing his own vocal melodies without the enticement of Lucky Charms.

I agree. He was getting pretty bad for a little while, and then overall he really started to improve. I don't like how he'e being forced to sing in DT in these later albums. But he knocked my socks off when sang as a guest vocalist with Ayreon. (Discovered that project way later than a lot of people. :))
