New KSE

Anyone else think the "making of " dvd was lame?

Basicaly it's just interviews of them talking about working in Atlanta, etc.

No tracking or preproduction or mixing is shown

I got the impression that Brenden O'Brian was trying to do something new with those guys and they were miserable. They basically went home and tracked the guitars with Adam D. and Howard sounded like it was the most unpleasant recording process ever..when asked about O'brian he mentioned how he hated alot of bands he recorded and was "rich and old"

i really just think most of you guys will say and have said the same thing about almost any band that reaches it's 5th or 6th album... that's not to say any particular part of the criticism isn't valid, and of course a lot of it is entirely subjective anyway... but i notice this trend often.. everyone likes the first album or two of most good bands, then it drops off rapidly after that... i think it's a very predictable phenomenon, and that above a certain quality level it says more about human nature than it does about the actual differences in quality between early and later albums of any given band... the existence, frequency, and severity of those differences, be they subjective or entirely objective, not withstanding.

IOW, no matter how much you like chocolate ice cream, you get tired of it after having it too often. it's burn-out, and it's human nature... those of you with your own bands can look forward to the same scenario playing out in the opinions of your own fanbases.

having said that, I agree with many of the production critiques i've read so far in this thread, especially as compared to AOJB & TEOH... but it's still pretty damn good however you slice it. Just bought the deluxe edition tonight and quite enjoying it so far.

unfortunately it's usually the case most of the times with a few exceptions. look at opeth, to me it keeps getting better and better from album to album. but it is very subjective however most bands usually follow that road. there are a handful of artists that can reinvent themselves after early success.

some other band i can think of on the top of my head that had better, if not equal material towards the latter end of their careers:

-already said opeth
-the beatles
-dream theater (they are close to getting off this list. i loved train of thought and octavarium but hated SC and the new one)
- tool
- meshuggah
- porcupine tree

there are more but these are the only ones relavent to rock/metal i can think of off the top of my head.

of course it's natural for fans who originally heard a band and fell in love to fall under james' category of "player haters" so to speak but i see it as two things happen

either fans complain the band changed styles and abandoned them or keeps doing the same thing. either way, one of those categories wants the other one to happen but if it did they would say the same thing. meaning, the fans that complain the music is too cookie cutter (kse) would be complaining if KSE started slowing down tempos, and unmetalizing. like me with dream theater. i love awake, its my fav album of all time probably in any genre, and i keep saying i wish they would go back to that, but if they kept writing awake over and over i would be like "this band follows the same fucking formula wtf"

really it's a fine line and a fine art being able to have a long career and be original and keep everyone happy and retain your artistic integrity.

But I just don't think they even remotely tried as hard on this album.

adam actually said to metalhammer this is the first album they did try and push themselves on (sorta meaning they found writing the other ones easy and had to work hard for this one).

i think killswitch could be compared to meshuggah in the sense that they have carved themselves into a genre and there is things that are acceptable for them to do, and other things that they just wouldnt do.

bands like opeth and mastodon for example are the kinds of bands where they can go off on any tangent and its acceptable for the music.

c'est la vie

FWIW i love all 4 of those bands

Nope. I'm still a massive Tool fan, and ISIS, and Cult of Luna, and they're all on their 5th or 6th album, and I can't get enough of their stuff.

The ice-cream metaphor is... lame.

Yep, I'm still loving the new Isis, Tool, Cult of Luna, PT output.
However this latest KSE release is just tired and dull I'm afraid.
Great musicians with great potential, but I'm just not feeling it.

i'm liking it just fine... the last PT, FOABP, seems boring and lackluster to me though, and i love PT... so yeah... it's all subjective.

is it just me or has every band's new album lately sucked...

I agree. It's like every band I kinda liked has released mediocre albums (i.e. Amoral, KsE, All That Remains, Old Man's Child, Dream Theater, Hinder, 3DD, LoG...)...

I actually enjoyed it very much, even tho they use that same formula or structure or whatever you want to call for most of their songs it sounds good. Don't forget all the hours put into it
