Night Is The New Day

I have just begun to listen to the masterpiece that I have patiently waited two years for... and I can say, being a rabid katatonia fan, that this is their best album.

US TOUR!!!

Does anyone else like the album better without Ashen? I just got my CD the other day and I dunno, I like Ashen but it seems odd on the album

Well after a few solid listens, here are my feelings on each song.

"Forsaker" - A good opening track. I wish the guitar did more instead of the one chord the entire time (until the interlude). A haunting (albeit monotone) chorus. Not one of my top favorites though.

"The Longest Year" - I do not understand why people think that this song is any more catchy than the other songs? :ill: It's a good song but the main part I like is before the second chorus when he sings "Find the one".

"Idle Blood" - Beautiful intro. The verse comes in rather unexpectedly. The chorus, however, is gorgeous. I love everything about this song until after the second chorus. Then it becomes boring.

"Onward Into Battle" - Ever since I heard the teaser, the chorus of this song always stuck in my head. I wish the bridge would have been a lead solo instead of the bizarre bridge that is included, but overall this song is great.

"Liberation" - I like the intro, LOVE the verses and then the pre-chorus "Journey, no present thoughts, coming day, darkest wave" is very nice sounding. It brings Tool to mind.

"The Promise Of Deceit" - Wow, I adore this song. I wasn't sure if I would due to the boring verses. But then the song becomes amazing with the whole "Burned all the maps to reach you.." part. I thought that was the chorus but I was pleasantly surprised to hear it wasn't and then the real chorus kicked in and gave me chills. I wish the background vocals were a little louder in the final chorus though. One of my top favorites.

"Nephilim" - This is a dark, almost sinister sounding song (because of my religion, I was initially concerned about what the lyrics might contain when I saw the song title, but I didn't find any of them offensive). I love that subtle change in Jonas's voice when he sings "God of ruin" in the second chorus. Overall though, this is one of my least favorites from the album because the chorus doesn't develop into anything grand.

"New Night" - I like the verses of this one. The guitar melody before the first chorus is great. I like the bridge in this one to.

"Inheritance" - Initally, this song didn't do a whole lot for me. But I have come to adore the entire "Let them inherit this fire now..." part followed by the brief guitar at the end.

"Day And Then The Shade" - The opening intro and verses are great in this song. I am not a big fan of the choruses though. I feel like they could have done something a little different to make them sound like they belonged better. As with most the songs though, the bridge wins this song as well. I like how they close the song by repeating the same bridge.

"Ashen" - Intro was good, I do not like the vocals when he starts singing. I've never been a fan of vocals that sound like they are being sung into walkie talkies. But the choruses are beautiful.

"Departer" - Oh boy...:erk: I posted my opinion about this song in the "Departer" thread. The first 2 minutes of this song are pure magic. I've never heard such a beautiful (but depressing) atmospheric soundscape like this song has soaring in the background. The solemn voice of Jonas is heartwrenching to try to sing along with. When the first chorus kicks in, the chills shoot right down my spine. And with the way he harmonizes the words "departer" with that same malisma vocal technique I loved from TGCD, I was beyond certain this song would be my top favorite song that they have ever done. Unfortunately, then Krister came in and (no disrespect to anyone who likes him) but I did not like his voice AT ALL and felt he nearly destroyed an otherwise perfect song. I would have much rather heard a woman singing instead of him. His voice is too "airy/gaspy" for my liking and I was very disappointed when Jonas never returned to the song to at least finish it out.

However, despite it's flaws, NIGHT IS THE NEW DAY still exceeded all of my expectations. I love this album now even more than TGCD. I felt this album was darker, structured better and the vocals were the best I have ever heard from Jonas. By far, the best album I have bought within the past few years. I can't wait to play this masterpiece for my best friend tomorrow when he comes over. :headbang:

has anyone got the DIGITAL BOOKLET? ... you know? I want to have that art on my PDA all the time , but I don't like mp3-buying! , I like physical stuff , the booklet as always great as we expect from travis ! ... I'm mad about something negative to TGCD , I mean there was more red and less black , and here is more black and less red. , if some one has the DIGITAL BOOKLET of the album , plz plz plz send me , I swear It's for my personal (katatonic madness !) use only on my PDA.

tnx anyway

I was about to order mine from Newbury Comics just to get the autographed booklet and then guess what? No shipping for Brazil.
Oh well, at least I don't have such problem with the Peaceville website but hey, I'll miss the booklet for sure!

Glad that you liked that, Brave.Archangel.

I can't imagine having this cd without "Ashen" on it. It's a fantastic song. The only thing that can destroy my love for this album is when they start revealing that other songs were cut and making them into b-sides. I want ALL the songs on one disc.

I was glad to get the autographed postcard with mine because I like to collect those from my favorite bands, but unfortunately mine was all smudged up. More than half of Jonas's signature was missing since it got rubbed off somehow (I'm guessing from when they stacked them before they had dried).

I let my best friend hear the album today and sadly, he was not near as enthusiastic about the album as I was. He said it was the best album he has heard in months (that's an understatement to say the least) but he really doesn't like the long pauses in between words when Jonas sings. He said "it shouldn't take him 3 minutes to sing one line". But I like it, so I promptly escorted him out of my house (just kidding). :p However, he actually was a fan of Krister Linder's voice in "Departer", so I suppose it's all down to personal tastes. I still feel like he ruined that song though.
