So much thread bashing! If everyone had the same opinions and knowledge there probably wouldnt be much of anything to discuss.

I like both the clean vocals and the growls, but I can see where the thread-starter is coming from. At times I have trouble determining what it is that I am supposed to be enjoying in the growl- the rhythm can sometimes be interesting and the aggression/dark atmosphere is sometimes called for, but otherwise there is no melody or harmony to it. Interesting rhythms and aggression/dark atmosphere can also be incorporated into clean vocals though, in addition to melody and harmony, so I can easily understand why somebody would prefer clean vocals to growls. Is there anything other than rhythms and aggression/atmosphere that I should listen for in the growls?

just listen for angry angry roar

look, you dont need to listen for any implied or subtle things, just listen and if you like it great, if you dont like it thats great too

also i dont understand how you think that growling has no harmony whereas clean vocals do, i havent met anyone that can sing 'harmonically', the voice can only emit one note at a time anyway

Lyrics, dynamics, contrast, enhancement of dark parts, makes soft parts seem softer, anger, aggression, rhythm, atmosphere, noise, um.... yeah.

this post contains the required retardation to be sigged and more but it pisses me off so i dont want to see it on every post i make

^really? =/

Not that I would want them to never use vocals again, but yes I would love to hear at least one Opeth instrumental album. Opeth are some amazing fucking musicians...its would be made of total win:)

I would also love to hear an all folk album from Opeth...still waiting for that one.

I meant that clean vocals create additional harmony with the rest of the music, just to clear that up.

I dont have a problem with growls though- I prefer clean vocals but I like Opeth's sound as it is. If anything, I would possibly have a problem with the lyrics or what the growls are trying to get across, but that is a different story and for me is not too much of a problem with Opeth (though Ghost Reveries still baffles me a bit since Mikael is not a satanist, but again that is a different topic).

I want to start a poll:

Opeth... no more penis? Should Opeth get rid of their penises and become eunuchs? I think they've outgrown the need for their penises, and having them has gotten old.

But I know the poll would just get deleted. :(

Well, to te people who want a 100% instrumental album, I say there's really no point to that. It'd be a waste of a whole album. A few instrumentals in an album are good enough.

To the dude who said the vocals kinda get in the way....

:erk: :guh: :bah: :Smug: :zombie:

my mistake atlantis

^maybe it would be a mistake to you, but id sure like it. and yeah, i said the vocals get in the way. crucify me
