Non-Raw Black Metal

Yeah Windir is the perfect mix in my opinion. Not clean sounding by any means but not really raw either - just the perfect levels and effects to make it sound epic as hell.

Yeah that is exactly how I feel. When I first heard Likferd my initial reaction was "Damn, I wish all guitar driven black metal was produced this way". It has a great mix and great production without losing the raw feeling or giving it an overproduced or glossy sound.

is the original substantially different? (I mean, like actually 'raw'? cos the one I have is as well produced as any other melodic black I have)

Yeah, that's why I called you on it (though I probably should have asked you which version you meant). I seem to recall you making joke recommendations before, so I figured it was in-character for you.

 You are the last person who should be recommending good black metal

Well I wasn't recommending anything, so your jab at my music tastes is pretty pointless and irrelevant here.

Mirrorthrone. Great atmosphere but also just fantastic in every way, including production.

maybe I'm mistaken, but don't they(he) have some death metal influence in there? I suppose it's a solid recommendation on the path towards black metal, but not really the best example of black metal.

Black Horizons - definitely NOT 100% black metal. more of a mix of melodic death metal and melodic black metal. sounds A LOT like SotLB Dissection, but it has more death metal in it than that.

Crystalium - good French bm with decent production and often lots of death metal influence in the riffing technique. very good band.

Negator - melodic black metal with good production. quite accessible for black metal.

Legion of Darkness - epic black metal with lots of melody. good production and quite accessible

Mjolnir - epic and somewhat unique black metal. there is often death metal influence in the riffing technique. the guitars and drums are often very fast, and keyboards are often used as background.

Thunderbolt - good black metal with good production, with some degree of death metal influence.

Hegemon - great, overlooked, underrated French bm. the production is good and clear, and the riffs are more complex than those of the average black metal band.

All of these bands are good starting points in black metal for someone who is into death metal and is looking to expand into bm.
